Depths Driller by TasakaSama

[raw]
made by TasakaSama for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

The main idea is that the player embodies a robot that has crash-landed on an unknown planet. The player must repair his ship to get back on track.

Fortunately, equipped with a scanner, he can probe the ground deep down to find precious metals. But beware, enemies lurk in the depths.

You will need to recover the necessary resources while carefully upgrading your equipment.

HOW TO PLAY:

WSAS to move Space to jump Shift for Scan E for Action Left click to shoot

This game was made by a single person, using Unity. Only the sounds and music were not created by me, so I removed myself from the section.

Music by: brebeats Oneheart X My Head Is Empty Keys-escape-bre Xlian

I played through the whole thing. My favorite that I've played so far! Well designed and cool concept.
Here are my thoughts on how you could improve it.

* If looks kind of weird how the entire body moves when you move the mouse. I think designing the robot in a way that the upper half moves like a turret and the lower half rotates in the direction the WASD keys move would seem more natural.
* Obviously it's a game jam, so I understand the simplicity, but I think giving actual designs rather than cubes for the enemies would be nice.
* It felt a bit too easy to me, I took one small scratch in the entire playthrough.

*There is a collision bug on the ship. If you try to jump onto it's wing, the collision starts acting funny.
* Having a reward or some kind of resolution at the end would be nice. Even if it's just an animation of the ship flying away to give that sense of accomplishment.

Overall great job!

Thank you for taking the time to play and I admit that I should have thought about the top rotation, it would have been more pleasant. For the rest there was a lack of time available, I would have liked to add energy upgrades, weapons and have different types of enemies but that will be for next time

Cool game idea. The entire body moving with the mouse is very jarring. It takes a while but you do get used to it after a while.
Could have helped with having a slightly stronger game design.

Cubes look pretty nice. The shadows had odd artifacts in them, but seems to be because of the player's light. Jumping control was difficult to find, but couldn't figure out where jumping is possible without starting level from beginning. Movement was sometimes jaggy/it kept shaking the screen a little. Music was nice. Player's shape was oddly static.

@mukult Yes, I should have only done the upper body which should have rotated. Thanks for playing.

@tero-pulkkinen Yes, it's far from perfect; I struggled with some points, and as a result, I didn't give enough time to the character's movement. Thanks for playing.

Simple cubic style looks good

The graphics was simple but very nice, and the game had a relaxing vibe. The idea that the drilling make the enemies appear is cute

I think the gameplay was a little familar, and also a tad slow - enemies are similar and pose no threat, I got all the upgrades really fast, and I didn't feel like it would be worth it to stay to the end as it felt the same

(BTW, personally I prefer in game tutorials, needed the site to figure out shift for scanning)

I think this can be a nice idea to expand upon - bring unexpected enemies and challenges while digging deeper

I may be dumb- I couldn't figure out how to get resources. I tried clicking to fire and pressing E over spots that scanned, but nothing was happening. Do I need to do something to unlock the drill?

@atsh Yes, clearly, it lacks improvement, more diversity and different types of enemies, but it's the lack of time that made me see lighter... Thanks for playing

@av-shustov Thanks :)Clearly I don't have the 3D skills to try to make it more detailed.

Really awesome vibe. Had some issues prior to fullscreening the game, but I think everyone goes through that trying to get Unity games to play on here lol. Great atmosphere, controls were easy to pick up and understand, and even when I tried going off the map, I got snapped right back. Great job!

Tying a bullet hell to gaining resources is a really interesting idea. Only problem I have is I don't think there is enough mining spots for you to beat the game and have the max upgrades on the drill. It can also be difficult to hit the small enemies due to the bullet spawning above them. Overall, a fun game combining different genres together

@lukystudios for the enemies yes, the smallest ones are not great, but there should have been more diversity if I had had more time. on the other hand for the resources they are not random so there are quite normally.... thank you for playing

Scenery and robot look good, and music is fitting. But the rest is very bare bones. I think it would be best to spend one day more on finishing and submit it as a Jam entry.

At first I assumed that the cubes going from the drills are resouces:) Could not find the Quarz deposit.

Didn’t quite get the purpose of resource gathering. Why hold Shift to search when it could’ve been permanent? Players see an empty field but have to hunt for items—felt unnecessary. Also, why limit shooting? Sometimes bullets just phase through small enemies. At least the game’s vibe was decent =)

Anyway, solid work—you did great! =)

@baturinsky I would have liked a little more time too, but I couldn't devote more time to it. But it allows me to see what I can improve on for the next times. Thanks for trying.

@mizaless Enemy quality will be a priority in the next jam. It's something I don't quite master. Thanks for the feedback.

Was able to complete the game! Enjoyed the mood and everything worked as it should, no major bugs. Intriguing idea to have enemies come up out of the drills you place. Only thing I would suggest if you make a similar game in the future or expand this one, it would be nice to place more hidden resources than the player actually needs to accomplish their mission--it took me quite awhile to hunt down the last Quartz vein. Other than that, nice work!

Awesome! Playing this game reminded me how crucial good audio is for a game. The music and SFX set the mood very well.
