Depths of Discovery by CamComDuck

[raw]
made by CamComDuck for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

You control a submarine.

Your mission? Reach the bottom of the ocean.

On your way, you will collect a variety of fish. Use these fish to upgrade your submarine.

The deeper you go, the rarer the fish, and the fancier the upgrades.

Controls: - Moving Left/Right: A & D or LEFT/RIGHT Arrow Keys - Collect Fish: SPACE

Tools Used: - Godot 4.3 [GDScript] - Procreate (Art) - Audacity (Sound)

UPDATE: Apr 7, 2025 - 6:35pm EST:

I really wanted to fix some of the minor visual bugs that were present to make the game feel a bit better to play. No gameplay elements were added or changed. (See more details in GitHub commit history)

  • Fixed screen resolution not scaling correctly
  • Fixed background not moving with player
  • Fixed vision upgrade not being clear
  • Fixed hitboxes to match sprites closer
  • Remove exploit where player could win by never moving
  • Fix music not looping

@literato-games thanks for playing! if the submarine doesn't work, make sure to click inside the game window before using the keyboard. if this doesn't fix it please let me know!

I like the graphics a lot, the idea is cool and I love that you built a full gameplay loop with upgrade shop. Very neat to have a game with progression. Well done!

Nice medium level of challenge, although part of that is sometimes you take damage when the fish is a decent distance away. Not a huge deal

I think some scrolling on the background texture would have been super helpful, I'm not sure whether the texture is tileable, but maybe some bubble particles instead? It needs something to indicate movement since it's hard to tell how fast you're moving left/right, and it would also really show the effectiveness of the speed upgrades.

Overall good stuff!

Really fun game !

Had a little trouble with the submarine hitbox, as it seems quite generous toward the fish.
However, the game was fun, and I really love the upgrade available.

You could have add some visual effect to the vision part, I think (Like making it darker the further from the submarine you are, it would have help the immersion).
Talking about the vision, is the upgrade on it working ? I had the impression it wasn't changing anything, but I may be wrong.

Cool and nice game nonetheless ! Keep the good work !

The game turned out to be interesting =)

It's not very clear what Vision is responsible for—when I upgraded it, it didn’t seem to change anything. Overall, the upgrades don’t feel very noticeable; I’d like more speed, more fish, especially at depths below medium.

Good job! =)

Great and interesting idea, i like simple games with upgrade mechanics.
Good job !

Just one thing : i feel the hitbox to be a little too big.

Nice one! I also love me some upgrade games with good progression, took me about 10 minutes to beat it.

I also liked your shop UI! the tabs were pretty great for sorting the upgrades.

Some suggestions i have is to add a flash effect when the player gets hit, and slightly darken the areas where the player can't see the fish.

Overall, great job!

This is SUCH a good entry. Very addictive! You've perfectly positioned the upgrades and the method of upgrading to make it have that "Okay, one more time, though." feel. I really enjoyed playing through this and planning my runs and trying to get certain upgrades or make it to certain depths and balancing those challenges. Really great!

Thanks for playing Deep Bat Rage! And congrats on finishing!

Fun little game! Lots of similar ideas to our entry. I would’ve liked a bit more polish in the main scene to help with immersion.

@fullbuff thanks! I'm curious, do you have any specific suggestions/ideas for polish to add?

@camcomduck Sure! From my point of view, a bit of extra polish that could help with immersion would be things like particle effects (e.g., bubbles floating in the ocean), small decorative fish swimming around or even some colorful algae there and there. Right now, only about 20% of the main screen is actually used for action... so with your lovely art, you could really make the game feel like a living painting!

Also, maybe some underwater sound effects? But since the music is you playing drums, I’m guessing you’re going for a more fun and quirky vibe rather than full-on immersion.

Really good to see another perspective on the submarine idea 😅 I liked a lot the upgrade system/options and how progressively you can improve it with the new fishes discovered. Also, the map indicator of depth and the line with the previous best score are good elements for understanding the current location on the map. Nice work!

Great job on your entry! and I see it's not even a Jam but Compo. Nice work! I quite liked the depth meter showing the progress. I was a bit annoyed at the health mechanics though - I see you already fixed the hitboxes but it still feels a bit unfair. I assume it's because the fish disappears as soon as the hitboxes cross, so we don't actually see the ship and the fish touching (having a timer for a second or so and only deleting the fish after that could fix it, maybe?). Also it happened even if I tried to capture the fish, and the fish was right below me, so the losing health sound instead of the capturing fish sound was quite disappointing. On the other hand, the fish that I bumped on the side were not even possible to capture; if they were still a bit below me, then trying to capture them required moving in that direction, because the sonar placement/direction and the movement were tied together. Maybe having the sonar follow the mouse would be a better idea? In any case, nice artwork and the entry looks quite polished (especially with a manual, progression system, audio, main menu and whatnot... heavens know I decided to just give up on every "unnecessary" feature like main menu or audio because who needs them, amiright? So yours look quite complete in comparison).

Great game  It's very simple and intuitive, easy to learn. I wish I could have continued after reaching the bottom! I wanted to keep upgrading my submarine to the max :frowning2: The music and SFX are great, too. I liked how the need to collect fish was balanced by the cost of using power to catch them and the risk of getting damaged by them!

Interesting idea! There's something to be said for the fact that I've played a bunch of submarine games already this jam and none of them have played like this one. The art is charming and the gameplay is chill and stress-free.
