How to run the game

Please run the game from the itch.io link :

https://madelinef.itch.io/testproject

The HTML export does not work here. No installation needed. Source code (Godot 4.4) available. Tested on Windows & HTML

Controller supported !

See Controls below (XBOX Scheme).

Description

Descend through the abyss to try to find the mystical Golden Fish. Confront the darkness, equipped only with your climbing gear and lantern. Be careful not to fall or to get lost in the caverns !

The game features 2 complete levels, with a small Tutorial. Arts are homemade, no AI was used, and the code has been developed from scratch for this projet.

Controls

From the floor: - Use the Arrow keys or WASD to move right / left - Press SPACE to Jump. - Use C on the edge of a platform to deploy your rope and climb down - Use G on the edge of a cliff to deploy your grappling hook and climb up. - Use V to throw a glowstick. - Use M (or Tab) to open the map

From a rope: - Use the Arrow keys or WASD to move up / down - Press SPACE to Jump off (only works if space is available) - Use C to release rope - Use M (or Tab) to open the map

The lantern doesn't work very well (bugs remain), but you can keep the key E pressed to use it (only when on the floor and not moving).

If you get stuck : Press BACKSPACE to reset the player position to the beginning of the level, and please tell us the location so that we can try to fix it :)

The Game should support controller inputs, with respectively (XBOX mapping) : Left Joystick to move, A to jump, B for rope down, Y to throw the grappling hook, X for glowstick, SELECT for map.

Not supported on mobile device (no touchscreen inputs).

I really like the atmosphere, the dark and little bits of light poking out in the cave is really good.

I think some music could have helped a little bit, the water drip effect could use something else with it to help add even more to the atmosphere.

The controls were cool, I liked the climbing mechanics, they were a little slow, taking a while to move around, and hitting 'G' was a little awkward for me.

Overall great mood and visual style!

I really like the feeling of exploring the caves. It has a nice atmosphere and always keeps you guessing what you're going to find. I had a good time even when I went the wrong ways. And eventually I found the golden fish. ^^

@yubs Thanks for the comment, we didn't have time enough to implement some music sadly !

@jon-curtin Thank you for your nice comment :)

@based-on-life Thanks a lot !

@toupaks Thanks, I hope your enjoyed the short experience :)

@bacontree Congrats :)

@kamile-v Thank you for playing the game !

@aleksey4adoff Did you find all 3 ? :p

@gifarre Sorry for the experience, we had some issue with the HTML export indeed and have seen various performances depending on the browser, but we were unable to fix it in the given time unfortunately. But thanks for playing anyway !

The caving is fun, the environment is immersive, the art style is charming. The bats are a bit ominous which is cool. The water drips are great and add a good bit to the atmosphere. Overall really good short game.

@zerocomms Yeah, that happened to me quite a few times too, you can restart the level by pressing "delete". I hope you still enjoyed the game though !

Performance was tanking a lot in my browser, it sometimes made it hard to appreciate the gameplay

The mood, atmosphere and art was really nice though !

BTW I Took a sneak peek at your github repo and had a good laugh at some of the commit messages ahaha, I hope you had a lot of fun making the game!

@d0vid @aeoncl thanks ! Yeah we had a lot of fun making the game. And yeah, my commit messages often reflect my current mood ;-) We had a merge which broke the entire project during the week-end for example (Godot couldn't open it anymore), the Git / Godot combination can be handful !

Somehow the performance was really different depending on the browser. We also saw significant differences between the web export and the direct execution in Godot. Sadly we didn't have time to fix it.

Cute game with good atmosphere, had some lag right at the beginning but it seemed to get better. The lantern appeared very dimly ahead of me and wasn't very useful so I mostly used glow sticks. Mechanics are pretty good. Movement was a little slow but I may just be too impatient.

Really nice game! I enjoyed exploring the caverns and figuring out the best paths - the climbing mechanic is a cool touch. The homemade art gives it a lot of charm too. That said, the movement felt a bit too viscous at times; a slightly faster pace could make the gameplay feel smoother. Great work overall! Btw, a map is a cool find.

The cat is quite cute, the idea with the rope is interesting, good drawing and thanks for the game with sound :)

Nice idea with the rope, and the sounds make the cat feels that is really inside a cold and wet cave, unfortunately I could not finish the game because I got stuck and everything stopped to work :(

@duke-ua @gordo-mcschnordo we wanted to make the cat go slow, as exploring can be dangerous. But you are right, I think we made the player too slow, especially with the HTML export that slows down the game even more, so it can feel viscous. Thanks for the feedback !

@kauesilva I am sorry to hear that, we still have a few bugs that we didn't have time to fix. We have the backspace key as a control for restarting the current level in case someone gets stuck. Thanks for the feedback !

Really nice idea and the design and art is really pleasant! The game did freeze for me on the browser but the time that it worked was fun for and I liked exploring! Great work!

Great game! Honestly, I really liked the graphics, and the atmosphere is fantastic. I love that the controls are shown right at the beginning, not just in the tutorial but also on the first screen; that's super helpful since sometimes I have to look them up in the description or I just forget. It would be great to have a fullscreen option, I didn’t see one, and that would make the experience even more immersive. Controller support is an awesome touch. It’s true that there’s a bit of lag at the start of the first level and it runs a little slow, but things improve shortly after. Aside from that, seriously, my sincerest congratulations to the team, I loved it. Awesome game!

Very nice exploring game, audio and vibe is great, when deploying and undeploying the rope the effect is a little delayed and trippy but still good stuff.

@moogs Thanks ! The rope was the main difficulty for us ^^

@iphen thank you for your feedback, glad you enjoyed the experience !

@kauesilva sorry for your experience :( but thank you for testing the game and leaving us some feedback !

@deadcode Thank you very much, I hope the freeze did not prevent you from enjoying the experience !

@milq Thanks for your comment and for taking time to play and rate our game :) We wanted to implement fullscreen, but we saw too many different behavior depending on the browser, and decided to drop it unfortunately !

@nacchan Thank you very much ! The rope mechanic was more challenging than we expected ^^

Cute animation and art style. The audio fit the cavern aesthetic and mood. The mechanics were interesting, though it felt the movement maybe a little slow. Nice entry though, keep up the good work!

Very beautiful drawing, the atmosphere of the caves is excellent, very cute main character, wonderful animations. Cool idea with the rope. Didn't immediately figure out how the rope works. Unfortunately there is a problem with fps and the character getting stuck in the platforms. Need a full-screen mode and quiet background music. But it was nice to play, I would like to see a modified and long version of the game. I finally found Golden Fish, thanks for this game!

@mamboman Thanks ! Tha map was a last minute addition, and I had to take the place of our artist unfortunately ^^'
@jb-rock Thanks for the feedback !
@jtap Thanks for your patience and congrats for finishing the game :) We tried our best to fix the performance issue in web-browsers but unfortunately we ran out of time (and of technical choices ^^') !
@librory Thank you very much ! Happy to see that some people meet our sweet hidden bats :)

I won't add to the comments already made about the performance on the html build. Cute visuals, gives a nice mood alongside the music. The rope mechanics are something that work quite well in these platformers, good job on utilizing it so nicely!

Good entry! I really liked the multiple different mechanics you were able to include in the game: jumping, rope climbing, glow sticks, latern, etc. I can see a future for this game were you make some interesting puzzles using those mechanics you have today.

One improvement I would suggest for the game is adding a little more guidance in the level design to help guide the player towards the end. Small glowing lights, or specific images can key the player in on where they need to go, or where they are trying to get.

This was an impressive array of game mechanics and art and sfx for a jam game! I felt that the kitty was a little bit slow, but I liked the climbing and grappling. I busted out laughing when I was playing the tutorial and I saw the map for the first time. Beautiful.

@maxdrago Thanks and glad that you enjoyed it !
@braeden Thank you very much !
@tobius Thank you very much for your input :) Our level design suffered from a lack of time and last minute debugging :)
@kristinamay Thanks ! The map was so a last minute addition that I had to take on the place of our artist and the result is what it is ^^

I enjoyed the artstyle and the atmosphere of the game! The light vs darkness works. The rope mechanic was a good idea and the "sweat animation" on the cat while climbing was a fun detail.
