ABSEIL by baknik

[raw]
made by baknik for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

Spelunk down into a cave, placing new anchors and swinging yourself to go deeper.

Try to reach the bottom while hitting as few walls as possible!

If the embedded version above isn't loading, click here to play on itch.io. Play ABSEIL

NOTE! If you're wondering why you can't place an anchor, it's probably because you are either too close to another anchor, or moving too quickly. Also, holding A and D do not swing you, only pressing those buttons while the swing is off cooldown will give you a boost.

Strategy I'd recommend only placing anchors when you have to. It's easier to reposition yourself horizontally while swinging on a longer rope. Placing an anchor is permanent (in this version of the game). Don't get stuck!

Controls: - Space to place an anchor - A and D to swing (this is on a cooldown) - W and S to ascend and descend the rope

It's a nice game, I like the little guy and it looks pretty nice!
The gameplay loop is pretty cool, and I like the sort of interesting challenge that goes with it. Works well with the randomness of the levels which is a solid feat on its own!

I wish there was a bit more feedback with the controls. It's hard to tell how much you're getting out of holding the direction vs tapping it. And I feel like it's a bit easy to lose all your momentum by accident. A small indicator of "Perfect", "Nice", "Ok", and "Bad" as feedback would help responsiveness a ton.

There are also situations where you find yourself wondering if you're soft locked or not, and the only way out is to either clutch it or bang yourself into a rock repeatedly to restart.
A quick "Give Up" button would be great for this. But also, maybe the ability to remove your last anchor 1-2 times per run would add a lot.

Overall I like this one! Solid stuff, a well put together gameplay loop. The gameplay is just missing some feedback that would help for the player improving.

Fun concept! Always love a good physics game. I feel like there were a few times I should've been able to place an anchor but the game wouldn't let me? Maybe I just missed something. Gave it a few attempts and made it to 170 one time!

Pretty fun.

Something felt a little off with the swinging controls. I understood them but still wanted to press the other direction too early.

I think I saw the rope tighten around a corner, that's neat -- but didn't have much use for it. Would be nice to have some puzzles crafted that make use of it somehow.

The depth indicator/target really helped encourage me to keep going.

Nice work!

This is pretty cool actually. I figured out that the cave was procedurally generated, right? What was really missing was some feedback. For example, when you are swinging, a rope friction sound. When you place an anchor, some sort of metal sound effect. When you take damage, an "AAAAAA" sound effect. Slap some echo on them and it would feel more immersive for sure. I think that the darkness effect could be even more pronounced as well. I only made it to about 110 meters before dying. Overall, I like it and it has potential!

Really fun, but a little difficult to master.

Well done!

Quite an interesting game, I struggled a lot with placing anchors but fighting with the physic was fun

it looked fun but was a bit too hard for me to control, maybe a easier starting point would helped me to practice a bit. anyway i did enjoy it!

A very interesting rope-swinging mechanic, and while the visual style is simple, it’s quite pleasant. Unfortunately, the game turned out to be too difficult for me, so I couldn’t make it to the end ;)

Nice physic game! maybe the player could walk when on a flat surface?

Really fun to swing my way down. The procedural caves were done well. Every playthrough was winding and challenging, but nothing was impossible.

The gameplay on this one is one of my favorite I've seen so far!

A few sound effects when hitting stuff would be handy, and it wasn't exactly clear why I couldn't place a new anchor. However, trying to traverse sideways when in a bind was a really interesting movement puzzle, and I think the swing being on a timeout was a really clever choice. Bravo!

The swinging was hard to figure out. I'm still not fully sure I understand it :frowning2:

I like the game concept and it's very thematic. Reminds me a little of Jusant in the opposite direction ;)

Really loved the core idea—swinging through procedural caves feels unique and satisfying! With some clearer feedback and a bit more polish on controls, this could be seriously addicting. Great work!

Cute entry! Simple but challenging core mechanic, and you tied the theme into the core loop well. I had a tough time with the controls, but I started to get the hang of it after a few runs. All in all I had a good time with it, thanks for posting! Oh and a heads up the LD embedded version doesn't show the UI, but itch does.

It's hard to control the character but I guess it was the point. Anyway I like the visuals and the idea. Nice work! Thanks for the game!
