Trepth by Quail Weaver

[raw]
made by Quail Weaver for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

Play the game at https://puzzleweaver.github.io/trepth <3

Explore a tree from the perspective of any of its inhabitants, but watch your hunger, and your health! Try to reach goals at that bottom of the tree. Sorry for all the.... bugs..... :o)

(Although the game is designed as if there was combat, I ran out of time to implement it. The unlockables also may not unlock correctly, even if you achieve the listed goals. Sorry about that! I will be uploading a patch to fix those things as soon as the grading period is over!)

an instructions screen and some audio would be nice! haha took me a few mins to figure how to play and how to navigate, but overall an adorable game!

Cool idea! Had some trouble figuring out exactly what I have to do but eventually figured it out and had a good time. Love the way the perspective and switching between depths work. Great job!

This was really cool! Absolutely nailed the theme, aesthetics were great. Super interesting concept too!

I started off with the ant and had no idea what to do, but the instruction of 'the termite eats wood' was enough for the next playthrough and I beat the game with the termite, had a blast!

I then tried playing with the grub. Is there a goal in the sky? I went up for quite a long time and didn't find anything there - I just got surrounded by hornets : - )

Really strong effort!

hey a bit lost about the goals in the tree but really digged the navigation up and down, really made a lot of sense for the bug x tree context
super cool idea ❤️

The idea is interesting.

Though lacking the battle part, the eat and digging framework are working well. Not bad to keep digging and eating to the end.

I really liked the depth mechanic, and it was really cool to see other members of my species run around and grab the food right out from under me. Playing termite compared to ant felt pretty busted since there was so much wood everywhere and it didn't block you from jumping down levels. Unlocks didn't work for me I don't think (wanted to play as worm fs), but it was neat nonetheless.

Had a hard time playing it to be honest. I love the vibe and the intention, but i think the UI/UX was a bit tricky for me. Shoutout to a fellow ant game! :D

This game broke my brain. I like the concept, but the graphics...well it's the graphics. And I didn't understand what to do, but I liked the effect and the idea.

My first impression was... wargh! What is the foreground? Is this the background? Where am I? Why am I here? Am I?? :D
BUT! I've gotten used to this foreground-background confusion effect, understood that there are these holes I can slip through, go deeper, and use that strategically.
You used the resolution of the texture, and also the dark coloring to separate the foreground from the deeper layers, but somehow it was still hard to see at first.
I like that you can play different insects - what differences did you have planned here (I played termite and ant)?
I also liked that the art style is consistent, from the background images to the character designs and animations, and even the UI. I absolutely love the font XD.

Background rustling or crawling bug noises, or apple munching noises might have been cool for the atmosphere.
The theme is great and the graphic style is cute, the animations look alive! Well done!
