Escape From the Depths Of Hell

Simple game made with Godot 4.4 for Ludum Dare 57 Theme: Depths

Concept

In this game, you become a devil trying to escape from the depths of hell. You must climb upward toward heaven while avoiding falling objects.

The obvious theme reference is hell itself – but as my wife pointed out: this is an endless runner, and it's actually quite sad (or deep) that the character will never truly reach the top.

It's almost Sisyphean – always climbing, always moving upward, yet freedom remains just out of reach.

If i where to work on it longer i would probably add some items that you can collect (money, shield?) and add upgrade/shop mechanic to ease climbing

Controls:

  • Arrow keys – hop left and right
  • A and D – climb up (you control each hand separately)

Tools Used

  • Godot 4.4
  • Aseprite – for sprites
  • Audacity – for sound effects
  • Novation Circuit – for music

2647 meters (?) haha. Would it be more fun if there's a beat to hit for left hand? I've mostly been smashing A/D with my fingers lol.

I get the difficulty comes from the AD mashing, but it feels a bit pointless. I fell like this sorta wants to be a rhythm game, that would be cool.

6137, repetitive music, but ok.

Good. I like to bang on the keyboard, and this game lets me do it. What more do you need? :)

Interesting game! And I agree with @oxnh , it would be cool to be a rhythm game.

Simple game but nice art and aesthetic! The gameplay got repetitive very quickly. In terms of controls, the mashing might have worked better on the right hand instead of left? Music was also repetitive, but good amount of polish overall, managing art and sounds and all!

I didn't understand anything for the first 5 seconds, but for the next 5 minutes I was glued to the music, cool

4945.... It's well done, could be varied a bit on the decorative elements and on the objects that fall, but it's fun, good work

Smooth like butter :) Very simple, but nice entry, the way they're supposed to be. Maybe a slightly longer audioloop would help, but in the end it is a jam so very understanding! I like this, kudos to you and your wife :)

Fittingly named New York Escape
I do wish that there was some other mechanic to switch it up at some point.
I'm pretty insane at the game as you can see

The idea and graphics are fun, but needing to just spam AD seems a touch out of place. I like the suggestions of making it a rhythm based thing, potentially getting faster with your speed the more you get without mistiming a press. Your ideas for items also sound like good additions. Only bug I encountered was that adjusting the volume levels at all seemed to turn them off entirely. It's nothing too fancy, but a fun couple of minutes. Nice work.

Simple and effective. Well done! I think you really nailed the music and aesthetics and they played a big part in making the game addictive. It does still become rather repetitive after a while, though. My suggestion would be progressing the difficulty as it goes on. I think you do have more drops when score is higher, but maybe play around with different drops with different mechanics? In any case I enjoyed it.![climb.png](///raw/14b/36/z/6b499.jpg)

2310 only  the left and right hand grip is a cool idea, just a bit frustrating that the speed is capped

Very fun endless runner with a fun twist! However it is not actually required to press left and right in a rhytmical way, I just spammed both buttons as fast as i could. I did really like all the different objects which i had to avoid!

Quite a simple and elegant game! One little feedback would be the main mechanic of climbing. I feel as if sometimes, the inputs are either not received or maybe delayed.

Simple, but very engaging.

It's really satisfying when you catch the rhythm and manage to dodge the obstacles in time.

The music helps a lot too!
