Crypt by Sam Flemington

[raw]
made by Sam Flemington for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

Explore a procedurally generated cave system with structures, enemies, and a foreboding atmosphere. Can you find the golden artifact and live to tell the tale?

How to play: - wasd to move, space to jump - arrow keys to swing your pickaxe - f: glowstick (w to throw upwards) - q: rope (w to throw upwards) - w to climb rope - p to pause

There may be audio issues with the web version, so I recommend the .exe

Diamonds give you more ropes, and green ore gives you more glowsticks.

If you just want to explore the world and see what the game has to offer, try the "explore" mode!

so i ended up falling out of the game world. i went all the way right, got to blackness, then went down. then left all the way over. then fell down to nothing, then it turned grey. so yeah falling forever :D

@jcmonkey Hahaha, yeah, I didn't have time to add safeguards for stuff like that LOL. I just used the foolproof method of "hope the player doesn't try to break things" :) There is a main path you're supposed to follow that involves minimal digging.

Awesome game! Finally beat it after tens of tries. Firstly I was trying to dig at random but then
realized how you're hinting direction. I had hard times tossing ropes upward, so had to gather more resources.
Meanwhile discovered way to dig stairs like in minecraft, even upwards: ![dig.png](///raw/24e/f3/z/6c422.png)
All in all, nice Godot game - beautiful pixel art, atmospheric kinda-volume sound, resources to gather, enemies to fight, caves to explore. I like how games about digging can took so different directions. Thumbs up!

Reverb gets a 5, easy. I'm horrible at the game, maybe because it's daytime and I can't see the level properly, will try again at night.

Solid controls and very neat graphics!

What a cool little entry. The controls were a bit difficult to use but got managed to get the hang of them quickly. I found the art to be a bit too basic but I understand if that was a stylistic choice. The controls felt smooth to use, the sound was fine and it was clear what I needed to do. Great work I would say!

Very cool game! I was genuinely really impressed by the sound design in this one; it gave every action this really tactile feel. Plus there were the little details, like your footsteps echoing to let you know you're in an open space. Visuals were also good, the darkness effect in particular was cool. Obscuring so much of the surrounding definitely lead to a nerve wracking experience (and also lead to my death in a lot of pits, haha). I will say it was a bit strange how regular stone looked the same as darkness, took me a while to get used to that. Although I appreciate the way that it made ores stand out more; making light travel through ores so you can see the whole vein was a nice touch. Discovering the temple was a cool moment. Got really freaked out when I was attacked by a monster and everything got dark. Never found the artifact, but had a great time with this one regardless. Nice work!

That is a one nice entry! Gameplay is good, graphics are appealing in low res style and the audio is fantastic. The fact that i can just tell the size of a cave i am in from audio/footsteps is really impressive! Is some form of raytracing used for audio?

Procedural generation is also very well done and exiting to see, especially in the COMPO category!

Hope this entry will be reviewed more to be pushed over 20 votes threshold. I am doing my part!

Note: i have a repeated problem where i would dismount unintentionally or fail to grab ropes. Not sure why, it works most of the time. Also feels like player should be able to use rope while being on one.

Good game, cute pixel beautiful graphics, everything is done well and nicely. It seemed dark to me at the beginning, it was not clear where to go. Thank you, it was great to play!

@mod-wiz Thank you very much for the kind words and for playing! The reverb effect isn't raytraced, I just check how far away the nearest wall is above, left, and right of the player, and use those distances to change the "size" parameter of the reverb.
Sorry about the ropes, I'm aware it's a bit janky but I didn't have time to fix them during the jam. Hope it wasn't too much of a hinderance.

@sam-flemington I appreciate the explanation. This system works really well!

Ropes are hard, numerous examples in commercially released games are proof of that. It wasn't a hindrance.

Congratulations on making it past 20 ratings!
