Hell R Us by CaptainDreamcast

[raw]
made by CaptainDreamcast for Ludum Dare 57 (COMPO)

It happens to all of us. It might be happening to you right now! You don't watch your step or karma, and wham, you fall into one of those eastern hells with their oni and yama and everything. This might come as a bit of a shock, but that's EXACTLY what happened to Dante, a knife-wielding barista with antisocial tendencies (most words in his description hopefully unrelated). Will he make it out of the depths of hell? Will he recognize the depths of his fellow humans? Will there be demon cat girls with suspiciously cat-shaped cleavage? There is only one way to find out... IN HELL R US!

ITCH_BANNER.png

The two things that came to my mind for the theme were some fairytales about visiting hell (Dante, Orpheus and the ancient Jomon folktale known as "Touhou 11"), and exploring "depth of personality". So the logical conclusion was to put a hipster in hell. What hindered it a bit was that I'm still experimenting with cutting the fat of my LD games' story, which really did not mesh well with this theme, but let's jot that one down as an experiment(TM) even if it didn't quite stick the landing. I had fun drawing and voicing the characters, Kasha a cute, I'll make a mental note for future Ludum dares that more cat ears might improve character designs. Gameplay was a pretty meh again, I had plans to make it deeper (heh), but couldn't really hash it out. Next time, next time.

Thanks a lot if you give it a try!

Hell R Us has a good sense of humor and a fun story that got chuckles out of me. I found dodging bullets and looking out for attack warnings decently engaging, attacking was nearly always stand next to boss and mash A otherwise, which being honest adds to the comedy for me. I love these denizens of hell just standing there taking a barrage of slashes from this guy who just stepped in.

I had a good time with your game, and mad props for releasing a game for the Dreamcast. Multi-platform anything in 48 hours sounds like a kind of hell in itself, but you made it through and back. :v:

This one is very engaging, love it! I dig the replayability, just wanted to keep going. In between the comedy and the artstyle, I really can see this one going on to become something quite viral!... Plus what the heck dude, trying to outshine us all with the fancy Dreamcast port?

Managed to run hell to the ground!

Anyway, this was awesome! The takes within takes on the theme were hilarious, I loved how all the characters had hidden (off-screen) depths in the depths of hell. The ending screens were really fun too!

The gameplay was a bit bare-bones this time, but I did appreciate how all enemies had different behaviours, with Kashsa moving a lot, Broni dealing a lot of damage & [REDACTED] spamming bullets. I tried speedrunning it a few times, but after accidentally skipping the result twice by spamming A & Enter I gave up :(

Overall, I enjoyed it! Great entry!

It's a classic Captain Dreamcast game! The cutscenes got some good laughs out of me, though I think the audio levels need a bit of balancing. I don't know how audio works on the dreamcast, but if it's possible to make the music a bit quieter as your voice lines are playing, I think that should be done. This one was very similar to David vs Goliath: What the government doesn't want you to know, in the sense that it was a bullet-hell boss fight arena. I think the combat in this game would be a bit more interesting if the enemies immediately started throwing projectiles when the fight begins. You learn their attack pattern from a safe distance, then once they stop, you go in for the slashing.

It's a subtle detail, but I love how the game opens with you spinning as you fall, then landing at a funny angle. A stellar opening.

Had fun with this one. The tongue-in-cheek jokes got a chuckle out of me and the "Hell or Hell" graphics and animation also made me laugh. Here is my speedrun attempt results.

I really like the voice acting, and the overall humour. Two things to improve come to my mind:
- control scheme is a little bit weird, i would replace Enter with space bar and also replace A by space bar
- fighting can be cheesed quite easily by just spamming A next to the enemy

But overall i see nice work here, so keep it up!

Ok this was hilarious, loved the voice acting, and the jokes. Music was funny and graphics really fits the humoristic style of the game. But on the gameplay side i didn't get any challenge or something i was just going near my opponent and mashing A and i was the winner, maybe it needed a little cooldown on attack or Invicibilty frames when you or the opponent gets hit ? Good job anyway ! =)

The presentation is top notch, the graphics are great, the voiceover is genuinely funny. This would be an easy 5/5 across if the gameplay was a bit more interesting. I ended up wanting more, like, wanting anything out of it other than walk close and spam attack.

Very funny entry!

the hit boxes are a bit too small, hard to predict. I am usually terrible at this kind of game, but managed to win by just running into the ennemy and spamming A..

The double A/enter control for skipping text / menu is strange.

The voiceovers and hand drawn visuals are as hilarious as always! Battles were a little too easy to mash through, though that's kind of funny itself. I love the reference to Guilty Gear "Hell or Hell" xD

Speedrun world record maybe? (ouch my hands, the "a" and "enter" mashing through dialogue strategy)

Another classic CaptainDreamcast hit! I really don’t wanna skip a single line 'cause I know there’s always that sneaky hidden VO waiting to surprise me. You’ve got your signature humor and an unconventional combat style compared to previous entires(which might need a bit of balance tweaking but honestly that just gives Dante more depth. He really feels like a skillful player) Nice job!

Nice Game. The fighting was the weakest part. Hit boxes were a bit small, had to be right over the enemy to score a hit. Story and humour are very good. Nice voice over too.

Interesting and funny game! And with a DC port on top of it ??

Like others, I find the combat to be the weakest part, I don't think I was hit once by an enemy by just mashing the A key right next to them ^^
But the dialogs were fun, I wasn't prepared to hear them all voiced. And all that in 48h is quite impressive, congrats!

The game has a ton of charm, really enjoyed the silly voice acting. Sadly the combat mechanic wasn't great, just mashed attack and won. Very cool to see a dreamcast port too.

Really fun game  The combat gameplay could be improved (spamming the attack button makes it pretty easy) but the funny dialogues with great voice acting make it great. I liked the ending

Cool game! I really like the bullet hell mechanics, and I appreciate the story in-between fights to break up pacing. Attacks-wise, all 3 bosses had fairly easy to dodge attacks, and they all can be spammed-out with the attack - even during their bullet patterns - due to a lack of a cooldown on the swipe. However, playing the game "as-intended", it's really fun! The story is also lighthearted and charming, and I had a really fun time. Congrats on your entry!
