PLAY THE GAME ON ITCH.IO

Why are you fishing so deep?

Deep Fisher is a cool little retro high-score game about Dave a fisher (not a diver) going deep in the sea.

How to play

In Deep Fisher, you must survive as deep as possible while scoring as much as possible. The most important when you're deep in the sea is oxygen!

If you run out of oxygen you will drown...

You will have to look for fish they give points and avoid monsters, you will drown faster if you hit them but killing monsters gives points.

Controls

  • Z: fire with shotgun
  • X: swim
  • Arrow Keys: aim at direction (for both swimming and fire)

The keys are using a QWERTY keyboard, it should be converted with your layout. Use the two first keys of above spacebar.

I believe there's a size issue when starting the game. I couldn't get past the instructions (the keys were acting on the game but i never saw a thing).

The canvas isn't filling the entire screen. Like a HiDPI issue, but in the browser. Super weird. I did try it there, without and with fullscreen, on both Chrome and Firefox on Mac Os X.

@jose-pedro-dias you should have a small full screen button at the bottom right

Or you can download the exe version on itch.io

When I got into the flow of it, things felt really smooth and fun! If I could stay in the zone, I was able to zip around quickly, maintaining my momentum, and it felt really great. That said, I'm not sure if this was a "me" problem, but I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around the vertical controls - I would try to swim down, and instead get stuck in place going slightly up. Similarly, I'd try to shoot my gun down to give me a quick burst of momentum upwards, and would end up gaining far less speed than I did when shooting left/right. These discrepancies in how my momentum controlled made it a lot harder for me to get into that flow state where I was able to smoothly zip around, because my intuition about how I would move was incorrect and I had to give conscious thought to what I wanted to do when rising/falling, and if I just went on instinct, I'd get stuck in a corner. Again, this might just be a me problem - Maybe the controls match other folks' intuition and maybe I'd get used to them with more practice :)

Overall, great job! I was able to form an opinion about the minutia of the movement controls, because the rest of the game felt so smooth and fun!

I also loved the little homage to the Sonic drowning jingle that you threw in when your oxygen is low :)

This was actually so fun... holy crap! We also made a game with fishing/oxygen mechanics, so it's awesome to see different approaches - the movement was really nice and pretty unique!

Okay. That's a fun little game! I enjoyed the visuals and felt the pressure as I went deeper... the drowning alert sound effect definitely created urgency! A little tricky to maneuver, but not too bad. My high score was 4780...

In any event, fun game... Great work!

Really love how the swimming all comes together in this, just like the mechanical side of it and the animation as well! All the collecting and shooting stuff meshes together nicely too!

Surprisingly challenging game with simple to understand mechanics, I found myself hectically trying to collect fish, dodge monsters and move towards the next oxygen tank all at the same time which created a nice sense of immersion. The graphics are pretty cool. Nice work! (best score around 30'000)

I tried playing it but the main menu screen doesn't come off, so I got stuck on the menu while still being able to shoot and move? I couldn't see a thing and then died.

Really cool visuals and interesting gameplay. Getting hang of the controls too a bit but the core gameplay was fun and fast paced. Great job!
