Asteroid Miner by hatmajaster

[raw]
made by hatmajaster for Ludum Dare 57 (JAM)

Dig in the ground, get fuel and gold, buy upgrades in the ship. You are lost all alone in the asteroid belt. You have to get to the 7th lone planet before your life systems will go away.

Tips: - you will progressively need more fuel, so its for the best to collect as much as you can - your health restore when you travel to the next planet - you may find yourself trapped sometimes without fuel to go next. Your only option is to die and try again. The collected resources will stay after death - even without pickaxe upgrade you can always mine resources if they are reachable - attack works only on bats, and the hitbox is about the size of the attack. Its rather small and its probably for the best to avoid fight

Controls: arrows - move, jump (up), enter ship (down) z - attack (rarely used) x - dig

Yay! I survived! Good little digging/mining game. It took me a few times to get there, but I made it to planet 7 of 6 (because I didn't have enough fuel, maybe?)... anyway, good work!

It's a cool idea, it's a little slow, but you can relax.

Very satisfying game feel and I love the addition of creeper enemies that can help you dig. Aestetics and sounds were nice and overall gameplay loop quite fun.

Nice retro digger game and some nice graphics and spacey audio atmosphere. Nice work, was quite challenging.

Hey your idea is nice but the game is quite hard hahaha, mobs are popping so quickly everytime i wanna go back to myt ship there are dozens of bats flying around and of course killing me. SFX and music are cute =)

@monogatari yeah its not easy, but its not so hard, you just have to move fast to outrun the mobs ;) thx for playing

Interesting and challenging game! I would like more feedback from receiving damage. Also, the game would not hurt if the character in a jump did not hit the ceiling at the corner, but slid and jumped up.

If you stay on a level (planet) for a long time, then a lot of enemies will spawn, it is very difficult to return to the ship, although you can say that this is a difficulty curve, and you should not stay on planets :D Not bad world generation, if it is really procedural generation!

Also, a very good style and pixel art!

@surweaver now that you said it it's obvious that, the character should have a box on the bottom, and a circle on top. And I was wondering whether to use box or capsule.
And yes, its procedural;)

Fun game! I think different icons for gold and fuel could help a bit. I also wasn't quite sure how to advance to the next level. I did advance a couple times, but I think it was always because I died.

Nice little game, my favourite is how the attack animation and sound is very impactful. I did wonder how the game would have been without a gravity-controlled sidescroller and was just top-down. It was got annoying very quickly to constantly bonk your head and try and fiddle your way out of the deep. Then again I am a bit sensitive to such things, but maybe for your consideration. Only other thing was the upgrade menu, though i'm sure you guys just ran out of time.
All in all a great achievement though :D

@kujoen its not really sensitivity thing, its just a bit too broken to be honest. I was seeing the issue since day one, but haven't had time nor really idea to properly address this :/ I guess it should just not bonk from the ceiling and stop for a while to allow you to dig up. Something like that, sadly not sure
Thanks for feedback and playing!

The controls feel pretty fun because they are pretty smooth and fast. In general it was a fun game! I was a bit too afraid to softlock myselft, but luckily it never happended  The explosion mechanic is cool, but for me it wasn't reliable enough to properly utilize it.

The fact that you keep the fuel from the previous planet is interesting but also a bit strange from a level design perspective. On the last level I got stuck with 37 fuel and I think there wasn't really any fuel left to pick up at the end. So I think this could be a bit refined but otherwise nice game!

@oadt yup, its probably a bit too extreme but there is precise number of fuel in each planet and you kinda have to get all you can. Its probably too much i guess, because many players get stuck without more. It should be done better

Thx for playing!
