The Red Baron takes flight again by CaptainDreamcast

made by CaptainDreamcast for Ludum Dare 60 (COMPO)

Fighter planes are really cool. But they keep making new ones. This would probably not be all that upsetting for a fighter plane pilot from 110 years ago, but that's the theme, so please roll with it and nod your head in agreement. Now the fighterest of fighter pilots (or at least the one with the most solid branding) returns to settle the score and to be red. Mostly to be red. Brace yourselves, """blue""" skies, because now... THE RED BARON TAKES FLIGHT AGAIN!

You ever have a project go wrong on so many levels that it loops around to being funny again? Where you're six hours from the deadline looking at this crash site and there's just a sense of liberation about it, because it's over anyway and you can do whatever you want? This is sort of what's happened here, so I tried to just put marshmallows on sticks and have some fun with the fire, the terribly, terribly janky fire. Before you say it, the Sega Dreamcast is Sega's newest console, so it's not old tech, it's as modern as can be, can you play minigames on your PS5's memory card? Yeah, see? It's still catching up. I don't know how deep in pop culture the red baron still is, probably not that known outside Germany and so-called "Peanutschads", but now you know, now you get the full scoop. If there is one thing I can take away from this, one thing I can share while I bite into the marshmallow roasted over this game, it's that dynamic difficulty (the game getting easier the more you die) is a great way to have a shmup submission. I hate it when Arcade games do it as a humiliation ritual, but for the Ludum Dare, I think it's a nice way to balance for casual and yeah-I-dont-need-an-umbrella shmup players. There's some sauce there, I feel it! But yeah, thanks a lot for playing if you give it a try!
