Here are my weapons of choice\/toolbelt:\n- **Editor**: [Atom](https:\/\/atom.io\/) is a open source editor developed by GitHub. Highly customizable with tons of packages. Like the [vim mode](https:\/\/atom.io\/packages\/vim-mode\/). Using emacs is of course heresy.\n- **Compiler\/Assembler\/Linker**: The [CC65 Suite](https:\/\/github.com\/cc65\/cc65) has everything you need for writing code in C or assembly for the 65c02 or 65c816 MPUs. There are other assemblers with more NES\/SNES or other platform specific instructions but I prefer this one for flexibility and the very thorough documentation.\n- **Graphics**: I bought [Pro Motion NG](https:\/\/www.cosmigo.com\/) about two weeks back and I am quite happy with it. There are still some features that one might miss but the developer is very responsive to requests and problems. It can export graphics in formats for various platforms like Amiga, C64, Game Boy Color, etc. (alas, no NES\/SNES - yet). It was even [released to Steam](http:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/671190\/) recently.","comments":2,"comments-timestamp":"2017-11-08T12:44:44Z","created":"2017-11-07T17:39:38Z","files":[],"files-timestamp":0,"id":50146,"love":4,"love-timestamp":"2017-11-09T19:12:13Z","meta":[],"modified":"2017-11-09T19:12:13Z","name":"Theme Suggestions","node-timestamp":"2017-11-07T23:01:06Z","parent":50136,"parents":[1,5,9,49883,50136],"path":"\/events\/ludum-dare\/40\/$50136\/theme-suggestions","published":"2017-11-07T19:02:17Z","scope":"public","slug":"theme-suggestions","subsubtype":"","subtype":"","type":"post","version":143293},"node_metadata":{"n_key":"50146","n_urlkey":"316854","n_parent":"50136","n_path":"\/events\/ludum-dare\/40\/$50136\/theme-suggestions","n_slug":"theme-suggestions","n_type":"post","n_subtype":"","n_subsubtype":"","n_author":"50134","n_created":"1510076378","n_modified":"1510254733","n_version":"143293","n_status":"WAYBACK"},"source_url":"https:\/\/ldjam.com\/events\/ludum-dare\/40\/$50136\/theme-suggestions","text":"After writing some cheap Pong and Space Invaders clones for NES\/SNES, I thought I might join LD40 for the first time trying to write a game for one of those systems.
