What's "Incompatible," Anyway?
I've spent the last couple of hours trying to determine what sort of game best fits the theme and I've come up with a sort of rubric.
Incompatible means either:
1) unable to live together harmoniously.
or
2) so opposed in character as to be incapable of existing together.
Most of the ideas I've seen tossed about best fit under the umbrella of definition 1, like "erotic farming simulator," "dance strategy game," and "fishing driving simulator." They're unusual combinations, and I think that counts for something. But it's outright contradiction that best fits both definitions. A "turn-based real-time RPG" meets the strictest criteria and should, I think, get a higher rating.
So, I'll be awarding stars in the theme category like this:
[1 star || failure] - aborted games with no clear genre(s)
[2 stars || single-genre] - single-genre games
[3 stars || mere juxtaposition] - any hybrid featuring the mechanics of at least two distinct genres where these mechanics have little to no interplay
[4 stars || successful combination] - games with two or more contrasting mechanics where these mechanics operate in tandem to interesting effect
[5 stars || impossible combination] - excellent four-star games premised on an outright contradiction.
Some examples:
A combination fishing/driving simulator would earn at least three stars. Four at most.
Same for a "dragon dating simulator."
A "first-person shooter/stealth" game could only earn two stars
"Guitar Hero meets Metal Gear Solid" might actually score a five, IF the player must make noise and remain unseen by guards AND the execution works well.
