Impressions from Ludum Dare 41!

I. Theme

Damn, that theme! "There was a lot of more better themes to choose", I thought first. And I guess a lot of you also thought this way - I saw all that complainging, even awesome memes about that. "Color changes everything or The environment changes you would be better" - those were my thoughts. The main problem here was "If I connect two incompatible genres correctly It means they are actually compatible, damn!". But then I realized it is exactly about that. And I guess most of you too, considering awesome ideas you did!

II. Favourites ideas for now

My favourite ideas for now are :

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/tetriform - Tetris with platformer (i guess) by @magicdidac. I was dumbfounded when I saw it! Genius idea!

III. My jamming!

Saturday:

I didn't really think I would be participating. I had no time this weekend, I had to learn to final exams. I checked theme at 10 AM and had two ideas - memory game connected with Necrodancer-like game style or just top down shooter with memory game. But I decided to don't do anything. I was learning till 7 PM and then I thought "Maybe I should take part in that Ludum Dare?" And I did. I started doing tiles and all that "memory" part of game. I was quickly done with it after two hours. I started wondering which of two ideas I should make. I knew that both of them will need AI, especially Necrodancer-like game. And I knew it would be too much for me - I hadn't time. So, if you don't want your enemies to be inteligent make them stay! I did turrets. Just turrets. My game idea was to combine bullet hell with memory game. At the end of the day I had turrets activating after choosing wrong pair of tiles (just activating, they didn't shooted yet).

Sunday:

I woke up and started coding. I just needed to add shooting to turrets, make them killing you, add some tutorial and screen with points at the end. After few hours the only thing I had to do was polishing. You know - screenshake, animations (shaking bullets looks better than static, hah!) and all that stuff. I was almost done, but it looked awful with only letters on averse of tile, look : ezgif-2-be2b862a25.gif

Luckily, my friend ( artist! ) proposed me to do symbols instead of letters and it was great idea.

Monday:

Most of the day I was in school. When we were back home my friend started to do symbols and was done with them about 5 - 6 PM. I implemented them and gave game to some friends. They rated this and found bugs and gave me ideas to improve it. At 10 PM we were done with that. Look at that symbols my friend made and I am so thankful to him! :D
