We're going to make a **top-down racing** game mixed with **colour matching**. My frame of reference is pretty clear from the start: 1990's [Nitro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitro_(video_game) (my dad and I both played this game a lot on our trusty then new Amiga 500s) and 2010's [Bejeweled](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bejeweled). These are the games I have most experienced with in each genre. At this stage I have to think to myself, **is my frame of reference sufficient?** Maybe I need to do some **further research** into games I have never played. The colour matching aspect is pretty clear, and the plan is to make this game look more like a racing game than like Bejeweled, so let's quickly collect an **image dump** of **racing games**. The [Micro Machines](https://bit.ly/2rmVjoj) series comes up in conversation with @daanvanyperen and @meatmachine a lot, so let's take that and Nitro into a Google image search and see what comes up, including toys and more modern games.\n\n![graphics-post-collage2.jpg](///raw/64d/z/14a9e.jpg)\n\nThis **image dump**, or **mood board** if you will, is mostly there to get me in the **right visual mind space**. This all sounds a little ethereal, but I find it helps me a lot to get the **aesthetic fluids** going. Hmm, that still sounds weird. *Let's move on!*\n\n## Colour Scheme\nWe pretty quickly decide that a **cute** style will work well for the format. So **small cars** and **bright colours** are the way to go here. This then leads to a colour scheme to use. There are a bunch of 16, 32 and 64 colour schemes I have collected over the years, but this image from my dump draws me in the most:\n\n![graphics-post-cars.jpg](///raw/64d/z/14aa1.jpg)\n\nI begin **picking colours I like**, avoiding tones that are too similar. This leads to the set marked 1. on the right side of the image, which I fine-tuned to the set marked 2, primarily by **scrapping the more desaturated tones**. This colour scheme is my starting point, though. **They are more a guideline than a rule.** I will add more as needed, and potentially alter some colours as I see fit along the way.\n\n[Next up: Art Process Part 2: Actor Sprites](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/wreckless-rally/$96159)\n\n* ## [Play WRECKLESS RALLY here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/wreckless-rally)\n* ## [Watch my PIXELART TIMELAPSE video here](https://bit.ly/2HR4vf0)\n\n![Small Thumbs_footer41.png](///raw/64d/z/14ad3.png)", "comments": 0, "created": "2018-05-06T08:57:52Z", "files": [], "files-timestamp": 0, "id": 96146, "love": 9, "love-timestamp": "2018-05-14T01:41:29Z", "meta": [], "modified": "2018-05-14T01:41:29Z", "name": "WRECKLESS RALLY Art Process | Part 1: Getting Started", "node-timestamp": "2018-05-06T19:25:02Z", "parent": 75601, "parents": [1, 5, 9, 73256, 75601], "path": "/events/ludum-dare/41/wreckless-rally/wreckless-rally-art-process-part-1-getting-started", "published": "2018-05-06T13:42:55Z", "scope": "public", "slug": "wreckless-rally-art-process-part-1-getting-started", "subsubtype": "", "subtype": "", "type": "post", "version": 284510}, "node_metadata": {"n_key": "96146", "n_urlkey": "330817", "n_parent": "75601", "n_path": "/events/ludum-dare/41/wreckless-rally/wreckless-rally-art-process-part-1-getting-started", "n_slug": "wreckless-rally-art-process-part", "n_type": "post", "n_subtype": "", "n_subsubtype": "", "n_author": "3398", "n_created": "1525597072", "n_modified": "1526262089", "n_version": "284510", "n_status": "WAYBACK"}, "source_url": "https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/wreckless-rally/wreckless-rally-art-process-part-1-getting-started", "text": " \n![graph_title_1.png](///raw/64d/z/14ac7.png)\n\n# Art Process Part 1: Getting Started\n## Frame of Reference & Image Dump\nSo we've settled on an idea.
