Theme Slaughter is almost upon us

With theme slaughter creeping up on us, these are my theme suggestions for the Jam. 2003aae46260884d732679f99b9234ee.png

I love games that have a twist. One game I remember vividly that did this perfectly is a previous LD Entry "Plug Me" (You can find it on Steam, buy it). It's amazing how such a simple concept (mini-platformer) was completely changed with a simple twist. That's what I go for with all of my creative endeavours. There's no need to change the world or revolutionise gaming.

I'm rambling aren't I. Anyway, of course you have the right to pass any theme you wish to pass during the slaughter but I still wish to convince you slightly on what themes you should avoid.

  • *Limiting Themes: *Remember, Game Dev is meant to involve creativity. Every theme must encourage this as a result. Themes that set out a guideline but don't create rules in your world are examples of great themes. For example, "Running out of power" clearly sets out a guideline, that your game must involve some form of Running out of power, however it doesn't directly state the entity or the component which must be involved, it doesn't say "A world running out of power" or "A flashlight running out of power", it just says enough for you to get the general gist and then you go out and explore yourself.

  • *Non-Themes: *Pretty self-explanatory, the most obvious case of Non-Themes are simply genres (simulator, genre, rogue like), these aren't "themes", at least in the traditional sense, as there are already so many examples of these ideas being executed that it doesn't allow for 'true' imagination.

Anyway, jeeze. I'm writing walls of text again. I'll wrap it up here. Pass themes you like, but please use the power of democracy with some caution.

*LAST TIP: * There'll most likely be thousands of themes to go through. Give each theme around 2 or 3 seconds. Themes that you will like should give you an instant "gut" reaction. Don't overthink it. See a theme that instantly makes you go "ohh", that's your theme.

I'm done. Thanks. Good Luck :)
