"Pick up space toys!", the Making Of.
My game, Pick up space toys, is a sort of "I spy" where you have to make room by picking up the space toys (we're running out of space, see?).
It looks like this:

People are curious how I made it. The key ingredient is a 360 photo camera and a tripod. I took multiple photos from the same location (being careful not to bump into anything or move the tripod):
- one photo with the space toys in place
- another with the space toys removed
- a few more photos with different poses for the toys that animate on click (spoiler alert)
Then I used an image editor (Gimp in my case) to mark out where the space toys are. I cut the "no toys" photo at these exact spots: the program uses these pictures to mask out the toys when they're clicked.
The effect looks really good when the two pictures match exactly. Unfortunately for one scene the sun was moving and illumination changed. I didn't have time to retake the pictures so we have to live with it for the jam.
To display the 360 photos I use the A-Frame webvr framework. It's good for that and as a bonus, when using a VR headset it can show the 360 photo around you in VR. I was only able to test with the Oculus Go but the effect's pretty cool.
I made the sound effects with bfxr, and the music with Bosca Ceoil. It was my first time using them.
I put the game on Glitch, a gem of a web site where we can share code, work collaboratively, and edit our programs directly on the web.
Please play my game! I hope you have as much fun playing it as I had making it!
