Thoughts on my First LD

Screen Shot

Well, I didn’t finish, not even by giving myself an extra day. Still, I had a lot of fun with this, and it’s put something into perspective for me: in the span of just 3 days, I’ve come closer to building a fully-realized video game than in the entirety of the past 3 years!

Why? A tight deadline. There’s probably a bit more to it than that, but the fact that there was so little time definitely kicked me into high gear. While I’m probably going to be a bit more lax now that the competition is over, I’m determined to keep this pace up until I’ve finished the game I started here! =)

So, what did I make? Several sprites (both monsters and scenery), about 1/3 of a level, and a vaguely Sonic-like character controller capable up running along slopes and climbing walls. I had also planned to implement both a melee and projectile attack for the player, a transformation that enhanced the player’s abilities (tied to a sort of mini-game accessible at checkpoints), and a tricky boss battle at the end of the level.

My game was (or, rather, “will be”) about a Cerberus chasing after a demon who has escaped from the underworld, and is opening portals to allow other ghosts and monsters to roam free. Here’s one of my favorites thus far:

Ghost Idle

In closing, this was a lot of fun, and helped me to see what I’m capable of. Also, I’m looking forward to the next Dare. >=)

Ohhhh that sounds like it could lead to some really interesting scenarios with the summoning monsters and things. I love the concept. That’s a cool ghost. :L
