I'm in! Long time, no see... (+ theme discussion)
Missed the last few events due to school but I'm off this semester so let's make a game!
I'll be using Unity for my engine and Blender for any 3D art, other than those my tools will probably just be whatever I feel is best for the job.
Now, let's talk themes.
Here's my votes for the Final Round, at least for now as I may change them as I think more them.
I really hated "Turn a violent game non-violent" and "You are the power source" at first because they feel limiting, but they could lead to some interesting ideas. "1 minute to prepare" is also very limiting and will likely lead to a bunch of tower defense games... Knowing LD, these are some of the most likely to win.
I love "Decay", "Side Effects", "Fragile", "Momentum", and "Connections." These 1/2 word themes are always my favorite, but never win. A good theme can inspire mechanics, setting, story, art, and more all at once, but mechanics is the most important part of that to me, so I really like these short themes that describe action(s).
"An abandoned world" also feel pretty likely to win, but I really don't like it. I feel like it describes setting and maybe narrative, but says nothing about mechanics. I feel like you could shoehorn a lot of games into this theme with some art and flavor text. If this wins, I may try to fit some old ideas of mine into the setting to try and complete some old ideas.
Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. I don't want to be too grumpy about themes, I think part of LD is making a weird prompt into something fun, but I much prefer starting with a neat theme then trying to invent one out of what I'm given.
