Free Munchers is alive, and development will continue.
It took longer than it should have to figure out how to make this post, but hey, I'm new here :)
If you remember back to the Apple II and IBM PC dos, there were a bunch of educational games by MECC for teaching kids history, English, and math (plus geography and a bunch of other topics). Out of those games, The Oregon Trail (which would have fit the theme of this LD quite well) is probably the most famous, but my favourite was always Number Munchers. Unfortunately, while The Oregon Trail saw repeated refreshes, the latest of which still runs fine on modern computers, Number Munchers did not. Sure, it runs in dosbox, mostly, but the sound is iffy, the mouse stutters, and it doesn't accept touchscreen input.
So, in the interest of keeping an excellent old game alive, I decided to reimplement it for modern computers.

Having recently revisited the original Number Munchers, my artwork leaves a lot to be desired, but the gameplay is mostly complete (only matching and addition so far), and seems to be a major hit with my son (who still is working on simple matching).
If you have kids, or little siblings, have them give it a try. If you want a challenge yourself, set the maximum number to 100 and see how far you can get.
Long term, I plan to hammer out the rest of the bugs, redo the art to be less... flat, and add more advanced math. The original went up through multiplication and prime numbers, but I figure I can probably take it all the way to calculus.
