{"author_link":"\/users\/jm2k","author_name":"jm2k","author_uid":"jm2k","comments":[],"epoch":1633709846,"event":"LD49","format":"md","ldjam_node_id":273807,"likes":5,"metadata":{"p_key":"161615","p_author":"jm2k","p_authorkey":"1102309","p_urlkey":"384605","p_title":"ld49 \"postmortem\"","p_cat":"LDJam ","p_event":"LD49","p_time":"1633709846","p_likes":"5","p_comments":"0","p_status":"WAYBACK","us_key":"1102309","us_name":"pm2k","us_username":"pm2k","event_start":"1633046400","event_key":"119","event_name":"Ludum Dare 49"},"node":{"_collation":{"body_sanitizer":"TextUtils::SanitizeHTML via existing importer","event":"LD49","removed_author":false},"_superparent":258323,"_trust":1,"author":102309,"body":"hi, im julia, programmer and 1\/3 of the dev team for **STYLISH AEROPLANE DRESS \u2019EM UP** and i\u2019m here to write a bit about our game and what kind of experience this jam was for me (and what i learned). here\u2019s a gif showcasing some **cool gameplay**:\n\n![gif ultimate smaller.gif](\/\/\/raw\/f65\/8\/z\/46af6.gif)\n\neven though we\u2019d done 4 jams over the years already, (as always) this one proved to be just about as challenging as the first one. you\u2019re always making a wholly new game after all! \none thing that did make this one a bit easier than previous jams was that i finally allowed myself to write some base code before the jam, for things that are simple but tedious and time-consuming to implement (like an options menu) that every game would end up needing anyway. \nthis was definitely a good thing and i\u2019m very glad that i finally managed to put aside my pride as a programmer for the sake of practicality. some true character development.\n\nwhen the theme was announced we had a list of vague ideas but the only one that really became a concrete game plan was \u201cyou control an unstable plane and you have to constantly replace your parts\u201d. \nhowever, when i started to work on the game i wasn\u2019t really feeling it **until** i was doing some early playtesting and the way you could drag parts onto your plane freely reminded me of the way you\u2019d equip your pokemon with accessories for contests in the ds pokemon games and i added a couple of silly cosmetic parts because of this, just because it\u2019d be funny. \n\n![comparison.png](\/\/\/raw\/5af\/81\/z\/47d5a.png)\n\nit was then the specific experience of playing a shmup while being able to drag sunglasses and a cute bow onto my character in the middle of combat that finally made this game click for me and i was a lot more excited about working on it from that point onward! \nthis is how we ended up with the whole shoot\u2019em up\/dressup game hybrid theme.\n\nthis freeform part placement system was also, however, what cost me the most time during development (as interesting things tend to do). whenever i thought i\u2019d figured out how to make it work, some new issues would crop up and i never really managed to get the system working completely before the deadline (as people have pointed out in their very correct feedback). \n\nthis thing may be funny but it probably shouldn't be possible:\n![*this probably shouldn't be possible!*](\/\/\/raw\/5af\/81\/z\/47d5b.png)\n\nwhile being able to put guns facing in any direction anywhere is incredibly *cool*, it also obviously opens up many more ways for things to go wrong, and a 3-day jam just isn\u2019t a lot of time to account for all these things! \nif i\u2019d sat down and thought about the scope i should be aiming for beforehand instead of hacking away with all the vigor of an overcaffeinated 21-year old, the game probably would\u2019ve been a little better. **planning is important!!**\n\nbut now: please check out our game which still ended up being pretty cool *and* fun!
