Though Woods walked with a noticeable limp he appeared in good spirits with caddie Joe LaCava and friend Rob McNamara. Woods also stopped to chat with Jason Day. Woods’ practice session lasted just under 30 minutes, in which he hit a handful of wedge, short iron, fairway metal and driver shots.
Near the end Augusta National and Masters chairman Fred Ridley stopped over to say hello, as did Billy Horschel. Woods then walked over to a golf cart with a couple wedges and putter in hand, appearing to head to the course to chip and putt.
Woods, 47, is making just his second official start of 2023 following an appearance at the Genesis Invitational, where he serves as tournament host. In his first competitive start in eight months Woods made the cut at Riviera and ultimately finished T-45 at the event.
Five of Woods’ 15 major championships have come at the Masters, the most recent in 2019. Last year Woods made his return to the sport at Augusta National following a 17-month absence due to injuries sustained in a 2021 car accident. Despite suffering lingering effects from the wreck, Woods posted an opening-round 71 and made the weekend. It proved to be the only tournament where he played in all four rounds last season.
Woods will be making his 25th career start at the Masters this week. He is scheduled to talk to the media Tuesday morning.
