Out Of Mind – A Kafkaesque Horror Crawler
After a non-stop two days, as per the norm, I’ve managed to finish “Out Of Mind”! It’s a dungeon crawler where your enemies are delusions, and your only weapon is forgetting them.
You are in a living nightmare. Trapped in an asylum, your torch is your only source of light. But seeing the apparitions your mind conjures hurts. Inspired by Eternal Darkness, looking at your enemies decreases your health and your sanity. This takes the form of the screen rapidly deteriorating into a mess of noise and pixels, and before long your death.
To destroy an enemy, you must forget them. Along with your paranoid delusions, you suffer from short term memory loss. Stay away from an apparition long enough, and you’ll forget they ever existed. You regain some health/sanity in the process.
The aim is simple – find the exit of each of the four levels, and eventually the asylum. But finding your way will be hard.

The graphics, pacing and sound design have ended up with a very dark, tense environment – almost survival horror. I’ve used entirely SFXR sound effects, but with some layering and reverb I think they’ve ended up very atmospheric!
Having started out with a verrrrry vague idea (your weapon is forgetting…) I’m really pleased how a decent game has fallen out of it!
