{"author_name":"Ranmara","cat":"LD #31","comments":[],"epoch":1418132820,"likes":1,"metadata":{"p_key":"22344","p_author":"Ranmara","p_authorkey":"22529","p_urlkey":"57713","p_title":"Screen One Post-mortem \u2013 Alex\u2019s perspective.","p_cat":"LD #31","p_event":"LD31","p_time":"1418132820","p_likes":"1","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"22529","us_name":"Ranmara","us_username":"ranmara","event_start":"1417737600","event_key":"26","event_name":"LD31"},"text":"<p>Sam covered most of the issues in our project in <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/2014\/12\/09\/screen-one-post-mortem-sams-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\">her write-up<\/a>.\u00a0 I wanted to talk a bit about the mechanics and how they evolved fairly chaotically.\u00a0 Most of our ideas were &#8220;flavour first&#8221; as in they were inspired by the setting rather than invented to fulfil a mechanical purpose.\u00a0 When we came up with the concept we were saying things like &#8220;maybe something ridiculous happens like the cinema gets attacked by bees or a giant snowman&#8221; rather than &#8220;what combination of interactions would provide an interesting challenge&#8221;.\u00a0 We talked about having an intermission, adverts and a newsreel like in real-world 1940&#8217;s cinema so that we could inject some narrative into it and tell a bit of a story.\u00a0 I wanted to have that classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c4itJv_DXhI\" target=\"_blank\">trailer horn<\/a>\u00a0sound accompanied by a giant silhouette of a snowman projected over the audience!\u00a0 What we ended up with was something a bit more abstract and puzzley akin to zoo-keeper.\u00a0 If we&#8217;d decided early on that this was essentially a puzzle game I think we would have spent more time trying to come up with column\/row interactions and then pulling a bunch of relevant real-world explanations out of our asses.\u00a0 We might have also made something less confusing!\u00a0 But then on the other hand we might have lost some of the style and charm which has received some good feedback so to be perfectly honest I&#8217;m quite glad we didn&#8217;t do that and instead decided it would be cute if there were bunnies with long ears <img src=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/simple-smile.png\" alt=\":)\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" \/><\/p>\n <p>One thing we&#8217;re going to continue to do in future jams is make sure we have somebody working on sound effects!\u00a0 It makes a world of difference adding appropriate music and sound effects to a game and I think the most noticeable change when we realised the game was suddenly going to be fun to play was the first time I ran the game after adding Becky&#8217;s sound effects.\u00a0 So adorable!\u00a0 Also without the music we wouldn&#8217;t have come close to conveying the mood we wanted would we?\u00a0 &lt;3<\/p>\n <p>There&#8217;s still a fair few bugs we&#8217;re aware of and the clutter on the screen is definitely a bit of a situation overload but I&#8217;m really happy with what we managed to create!\u00a0 In the meantime I&#8217;m enjoying playing other people&#8217;s entries and seeing lots of interesting concepts come out of a very difficult theme! -x-<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-31\/?action=preview&amp;uid=22529\" target=\"_blank\">~~~~RATE AND PLAY~~~~~<\/a><\/p>","time":"December 9th, 2014 8:47 am","title":"Screen One Post-mortem \u2013 Alex\u2019s perspective."}
