Ideas for this Ludum Dare #31

Okay, so the theme is “entire game on one screen”. As I understand it, that isn’t a “hard rule”, but rather a theme.

So here are the ideas I have had, many of them feature the idea as a “soft rule” I should say.

Door Unlocking Game – my initial though, the idea is there is a vault behind a bunch of doors and you just have to keep unlocking them and behind each one is another door, all the way up to the prize inside. In this way the game could be on one screen. Each door that unlocks, would slide out of the way to reveal the door behind it, and so on and so forth. However I feel that this idea has been done, probably a lot of times. That is not to say that I couldn’t make a cool game based on this idea, but I feel it would lake a certain “je ne sais quoi”.

Screen slider game – the idea here is that you would be handling a bunch of different games at once. The screen of this game has several small games going on in it at once. You would click one of them to zoom in on it, and then do something and then click to zoom out of it. Some of the games, you could also slide off screen. Okay this is really a loose idea. The basic theory is that you have to manipulate stuff one your screen space in order to maximize what you need to do. Like there might be one screen that displays numbers every few minutes, and when it does you need to put numbers into another screen and hit enter, but meanwhile you have to watch another screen to interact with it once in a while. You could slide the screen that the numbers need to go into off the screen while you don’t need it, thus allowing you to see the other screens more visibly. basically, yeah, it’s a game about screen space and organizing it as new elements are introduced.

Camera Game – this idea I couldn’t work through to make something quite right. The idea is that your are some person who has to watch several monitors (somewhere around 8 monitors) and you have to use all of them. One idea on how to make this work, was to be something like a security guard at a prison. where you would have to call guards on escaping criminals. But it might also be more like a war situation, where you have to figure out where troops are based on the screens. Another idea is like a criminal investigator. Each screen gives you a different short clip of what happened, and you have to figure out who did the crime. (but you might not be able to tell certain things just by the clip, such as the time of that specific clip or possibly some persons identity in it. You have to use context clues and other clips to put together what happened. This idea seemed sort of like it would be short lived. (not much story or not much to do before you get bored.)

Single screen camera game – like the last idea, but you have one screen and you have to flick between cameras. You also have different tools, such as a crane, or possibly a remote control car (idk), but each screen has something you could do, and the objective was to get some kind of box from one place to another, by using all of the screens.(This ideas seems easy and like it’s probably a safe bet to use. However… I felt it lacked story and a sense of adventure. It seems like it worked for the theme and the game jam, but wasn’t truly “special”)

Nostalgic video game game thingy – okay, this is the idea that I am going with. This is it: You are essentially a kid playing video games (SNES). You can look at a tv screen, and interact with whatever game you are playing with at that moment. You can also switch game cartridges (there are 3 games) and play other games. Each game has it’s own little adventure about something (their stories might be connected or not. Idk yet. I wanna make some sort of connection). The catch is that items/ abilities that you get in one game, you also, get in the other games.) And so you might get a lava suit in one game, and now you can use that in another game to move through a Lavafall. The games will have to be extremely short and feature much the same mechanics (probably side scroll plat former, since that is more doable and better at making a meaningful narrative).

Keep Game Jammin my peeps!

-TTYS!
