{"author_name":"Cheshyr","cat":"LD #31","comments":[],"epoch":1417535340,"likes":2,"metadata":{"p_key":"25635","p_author":"Cheshyr","p_authorkey":"20497","p_urlkey":"61055","p_title":"48 hours, Preplanning, and Scope Creep","p_cat":"LD #31","p_event":"LD31","p_time":"1417535340","p_likes":"2","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"20497","us_name":"Cheshyr","us_username":"cheshyr","event_start":"1417737600","event_key":"26","event_name":"LD31"},"text":"<p>48 hours isn&#8217;t a lot of time. \u00a0Seriously.<\/p>\n <p>This will be my 5th Ludum Dare, and looking back, all my attempts\u00a0have been overly ambitious. \u00a0While there&#8217;s value in having room to grow the game afterwards, I&#8217;m taking some steps to mitigate the damage this time.<\/p>\n <p>Ask a Game Dev recently wrote a post talking about Core Gameplay Loops. \u00a0While the discussion focused on progression, the idea also feels like a good starting place when it comes to architecting a game jam design.<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/askagamedev.tumblr.com\/post\/101776602061\/progression-or-skill-tree-systems-the-type-you\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/askagamedev.tumblr.com\/post\/101776602061\/progression-or-skill-tree-systems-the-type-you<\/a><\/p>\n <p>Frequently, I find my game ideas fall into higher level loops, and don&#8217;t have a strong base loop, or good feedback between the base loop and the higher level loops. \u00a0So, I&#8217;m starting there\u00a0this time. \u00a0I can grow it upward post-compo, if it goes somewhere I like.<\/p>\n <p>When we reach Round 5 for theme voting, I like to gather the voting data from the previous rounds and attempt to predict the outcome. \u00a0From there, I brainstorm potential ideas for the top 5-8 likely winners. \u00a0No code is written, no assets created. \u00a0I&#8217;m just getting past that hour of dead where I&#8217;m not prepared for the winning theme.<\/p>\n <p>Meals and Sleep will be scheduled. \u00a0There will be an allowance for a couple breaks as needed, including dinner out Saturday Night, to clear my head.<\/p>\n <p>That&#8217;s my plan. \u00a0Hopefully outlining it here is of use to someone.<\/p>","time":"December 2nd, 2014 10:49 am","title":"48 hours, Preplanning, and Scope Creep"}
