{"author_name":"frankd0331","cat":"LD #29","comments":[],"epoch":1399992480,"likes":2,"metadata":{"p_key":"29860","p_author":"frankd0331","p_authorkey":"34202","p_urlkey":"65326","p_title":"LD29: Apologeticum Post Mortem","p_cat":"LD #29","p_event":"LD29","p_time":"1399992480","p_likes":"2","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"34202","us_name":"frankd0331","us_username":"frankd0331","event_start":"1398384000","event_key":"22","event_name":"LD29"},"text":"<p style=\"color: #141412\">Well, this was my first entry into Ludum Dare and my first somewhat serious attempt at making a playable game. \u00a0I named the game Latin for apology, because I didn&#8217;t polish the game very well. \u00a0I used only 48 hours, but did enter this as a Jam submission. \u00a0The game&#8217;s main mechanic was that it reverses gravity if you fall &#8220;beneath\u00a0the surface.&#8221; You can play the game here:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ac0404\" href=\"http:\/\/frankdudek.com\/pages\/ld48.html\">Apologeticum<\/a>.<\/p>\n <p style=\"color: #141412\">Tools Used:<\/p>\n <ul>\n <li><span style=\"color: #141412\">Language\/Framework: Haxe\/Openfl\/HaxeFlixel<\/span><\/li>\n <li>IDE: FlashDevelop<\/li>\n <li>Map Editor: Ogmo<\/li>\n <li>Sounds: Bfxr<\/li>\n <li>Drawing tools: Fireworks CS6, Pickle<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p style=\"color: #141412\">What went wrong:<\/p>\n <ul style=\"color: #141412\">\n <li>Lack of interest towards the end. \u00a0There was just something about the first night, I felt unstoppable. \u00a0I was coding rapidly and coming up with new solutions to problems quickly, the process was fun and exciting. \u00a0Not so much on the 2nd day. \u00a0Maybe it was because I had some wine on the 2nd day. \u00a0Possibly my stamina for these kinds of tasks aren&#8217;t built up yet, and maybe the process does slow down quite a bit towards the end.<\/li>\n <li>My health implementation. \u00a0The way I used health and other things were not focused. \u00a0For example: players take damage when they flip from &#8220;Top World&#8221; to &#8220;Bottom World.&#8221; The main reason I did this was in \u00a0case a player got stuck bouncing back and forth, they would just die and restart the level. \u00a0With more thought a better solution would have been found. \u00a0In other words: I don&#8217;t want to use mechanics to fix flaws in design.<\/li>\n <li>The boss&#8230; I really just half assed this one.<\/li>\n <li>Picking up bombs and throwing them wasvery glitchy.<\/li>\n <li>So right before the compo I saw HaxeFlixel was recently upgraded to 3.3.0, so I decided to get into \u00a0PowerShell and do a $&gt;haxelib upgrade This was a bad idea. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know what it was but trying to use tilemaps was bugged and didn&#8217;t work. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t quite sure how to go back to the previous version, so I just went to the dev branch of HaxeFlixel instead. \u00a0This solved my problems.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p style=\"color: #141412\">The Good:<\/p>\n <ul style=\"color: #141412\">\n <li>I FINISHED! \u00a0Wow, it&#8217;s a really good feeling to finish something. \u00a0I&#8217;m the type of person who typically just buys stuff and doesn&#8217;t produce anything. \u00a0Even at my job (nurse), it&#8217;s not like I&#8217;m making anything. \u00a0It&#8217;s a new feeling (for me) to make something.<\/li>\n <li>Ludum Dare community. \u00a0Very constructive.<\/li>\n <li>I think my initial concept was interesting at least, even if I didn&#8217;t implement it to the nines.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p style=\"color: #141412\">Summary of what I learned:<\/p>\n <ul style=\"color: #141412\">\n <li>I need to make more games.<\/li>\n <li>It&#8217;s ok to spend more time figuring out design solutions.<\/li>\n <li>It&#8217;s ok to trash some ideas if they&#8217;re not working out.<\/li>\n <li>Don&#8217;t use mechanics to fix design errors.<\/li>\n <li>Expect issues when upgrading software or libraries.<\/li>\n <li>It&#8217;s good to make things.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p style=\"color: #141412\">Thank you everyone, who tried my game.<\/p>","time":"May 13th, 2014 9:48 am","title":"LD29: Apologeticum Post Mortem"}
