Post-mortem for Pandorian Planet

It’s over and I’m late with this. Let’s do it anyways.

Our game: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=34500

I originally planned to participate alone, but I ended up with a couple of friends. We started 4am at Saturday (theme reveal time). You would think that’s early enough, wouldn’t you? We don’t, not anymore. We had a huge list of problems and bugs. I spent 6 hours fixing collision detection, and it still is buggy! I have no idea why it was so hard, but it was. We also found a huge memory leak in either HaxePunkTmx or Haxe’s Xml.parse, not sure which one. The loaded data just stays in the memory, unaccessable. Each piece of map takes 300MB of memory. Our graphics artist did absolutely great job, although he went solo in Day 2. That pushed us back too.

So, what was our game meant to be? A simple shoot’em’up in caves. You would have cleared the caves as your mission. Down there you would have got a flashback telling you that you’re on the wrong side. Time to stop the launch of the planet-destroying missile! None of that happened. No time.

We shot too far and we missed. But, even with all of that, we had a really great time. We’ll be joining next time too (at least I am)!

Results: I’ve had enough of Flash for forever now, so I’m targeting desktop and HTML5 from now on. I like CoffeeScript + CreateJS. Other recommendations?
