It was fun to write it even though I didn’t have the whole weekend to do the LD. So it’s an effect of 5-6h of coding+stuff. I started out with one assumption: I’ll write a game in Love2D.

I used Hardon Collider by VRLD to first detect the collisions with ground (planned to do some actual terrain back then instead of two rectangles) then added the start screen with Hump (also by VRLD), it’s a really slick way to switch between gameplay and menus.

After adding all the entities and logic I decided to add some sound.So I

discovered, read about and included Slam (by VRLD) which handles Sounds nicely (thanks to Headchant’s article)

generated some sounds with SFXR, tuned them a bit and chose the right ones

added play() calls in various places throughout the game

all within an hour.

Music was pretty quick too, I found Nehmulos’s post with a procedural Impulse Tracker module generator autotracker-bottomup by Ben “GreaseMonkey” Russel. After the 4th run I had a base track that needed some tuning, and lost the next 30min looking for a tracker capable of opening .it files on Ubuntu. Schism Tracker helped, and that’s how I got my music. It’s ogg instead of .it due to problems with mod files in love2d during the LD when I jammed with The Sheep. That took me ~45min.

Thanks for reading this and I hope the links will help you with other Ludum Dares and game jams.

December 15th, 2013 3:06 pm
I’m out!"}
