{"author_name":"john_conder9","cat":"LD #28","comments":[],"epoch":1387081980,"likes":3,"metadata":{"p_key":"35437","p_author":"john_conder9","p_authorkey":"12682","p_urlkey":"71003","p_title":"Approaching the end of day 1 (look, I\u2019m a day late !)","p_cat":"LD #28","p_event":"LD28","p_time":"1387081980","p_likes":"3","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"12682","us_name":"john_conder9","us_username":"john_conder9","event_start":"1386892800","event_key":"20","event_name":"LD28"},"text":"<p>Today has been interesting. \u00a0I made the decision to go with CraftyJS as my platform, which means &#8230; I needed to learn CraftyJS, get a thorough refresher of javascript, decide on the game, make a bunch of assets, and do a bunch of code. \u00a0I did everything minus the last one &#8211; after all the coding I did learning CraftyJS (on a demo project) I felt like doing asset production. \u00a0So that&#8217;s what I did.<\/p>\n <p><i>You are a legendary warrior dog hero on a quest to stop the evil wizard from destroying the world. \u00a0Or perhaps I should say, you will become a legendary warrior hero after you stop the evil wizard from destroying the world. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t stop him, you won&#8217;t be much of a hero.<\/i><\/p>\n <p>I worked a bunch on a basic tileset (I&#8217;m really bad at pixel art so it takes me forever) AND I LOST the BEST wizard sprite I have EVER done (closed photoshop without saving on accident). \u00a0Also, due to my total lack of competency as an artist, I made the decision to not do animation. \u00a0It&#8217;s a nice touch but it would take me the entire time to get the worst looking animations you&#8217;ve ever seen, so, screw it. \u00a0Here is what I am currently at:<\/p>\n <div style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img alt=\"Empty tiles\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/fcqlhGQ.png\" width=\"264\" height=\"264\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiles<\/p><\/div>\n <p><em>You notice there is a distinct abundance of this &#8220;one of a kind&#8221; plant. \u00a0It&#8217;s probably just a glitch in the story. \u00a0It shouldn&#8217;t have happened in the first place, but well now that it has we just need to move along and pretend we never saw it. \u00a0Really, you only get one.<\/em><\/p>\n <p>Thankfully I&#8217;m entering the jam since a friend of mine (an amazing composer) has offered to do some music for it, although he is time-constrained this weekend studying for finals. \u00a0The other major assets I finished (loosely, I need a few more sketches done) is the intro &#8220;video&#8221;\/voice over. \u00a0It&#8217;s done in a sketchy style and I need to probably double the amount of sketches I have, but those go by pretty quickly. \u00a0I just haven&#8217;t decided what I want to show on screen during the voice over. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the imgur gallery with it and a link to the voice over on soundcloud:<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/L6bdk\">Intro Sketches<\/a><\/p>\n <p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/purebe\/warrior-dog-intro\">Intro voice over<\/a><\/p>\n <p><em>It&#8217;s been a long journey. \u00a0But you finally did it! \u00a0You made it to the evil wizard. \u00a0Considering how difficult just getting here was, and let&#8217;s be frank: it was literally a walk in the park, I&#8217;m not sure if there is anything you could possibly do to stop the most powerful evil wizard that has ever lived. \u00a0If only dogs had larger brains, you might be able to think of something. \u00a0But we both know, and it&#8217;s quite clear, you are just a stupid puppy with big dreams. \u00a0Oh well, I suppose you can throw yourself at one of his fireballs and delay the end of the world for a few more mere seconds..that&#8217;s heroic&#8230;right?<\/em><\/p>\n <p>Implementing the theme has been difficult for me. \u00a0I feel like everything I think of is too broad and vague. \u00a0At the end of the day I&#8217;ve more or less settled on this idea of a branching storyline where you only get to make a single decision at each branch, and then you just have to live with it. \u00a0The only problem with that, the obvious problem, is the amount of content something like that requires&#8230; \u00a0From what I can tell, it\u00a0<em>looks\u00a0<\/em>like it should be feasible given how powerful CraftyJS seems to be. \u00a0I&#8217;ll have to make do in a lot of cases, reuse the crap out of the art assets (or perhaps use some cruddy place holders, pixeling just takes me too long) and figure out a good way to achieve gameplay that is mostly independent\u00a0of the story &#8211; while maintaining the feeling of each story arc having an impact on the gameplay experience. \u00a0. . . Yeah, I&#8217;ll probably fail getting this all done \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n <p><i>You are hopelessly lost in this cave. \u00a0I warned you, I really did. \u00a0I said, &#8220;that is not the way the game wants you to go.&#8221; \u00a0I told you at least three times! \u00a0But no, you didn&#8217;t listen to me. \u00a0And now we&#8217;re here. \u00a0In a cave. \u00a0You haven&#8217;t forgotten about the evil wizard out there killing untold amounts of innocent people, have you? \u00a0I would hope not. \u00a0But what does it matter&#8230; it seems you will never get out of this cave. \u00a0You will fail, alone in a cave. \u00a0Oh, quite right &#8211; this is where I take my leave. \u00a0Farewell would-be hero, you stupid mutt.<\/i><\/p>\n <p>I almost forgot, I also decided on a title:<\/p>\n <h2>Superly Major Questing Adventure Fun Times<\/h2>\n <p>Yep. \u00a0I think that about covers day 1.<\/p>","time":"December 14th, 2013 11:33 pm","title":"Approaching the end of day 1 (look, I\u2019m a day late !)"}
