{"author_name":"KitiJenGames","cat":"LD #36","comments":[],"epoch":1472460960,"likes":5,"metadata":{"p_key":"3715","p_author":"KitiJenGames","p_authorkey":"113143","p_urlkey":"39178","p_title":"First game, first gamejam!","p_cat":"LD #36","p_event":"LD36","p_time":"1472460960","p_likes":"5","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"113143","us_name":"KitiJenGames","us_username":"kitijengames","event_start":"1472169600","event_key":"35","event_name":"LD36"},"text":"<p>We are a young brother and sister team. \u00a0This is our first game together, and we made it using <a href=\"https:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scratch<\/a>, which we have been using since one of us joined our local Code Club. \u00a0We were invited to participate in Ludum Dare 36\u00a0by local game developers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sogoodstudios\" target=\"_blank\">SoGoodStudios<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OhCarson\" target=\"_blank\">SizeableGames<\/a> who\u00a0made us feel really welcome and helped us by testing our game and giving us feedback.<\/p>\n <p>Our\u00a0game is called <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-36\/?action=preview&amp;uid=113143\">Roman Defence<\/a>. \u00a0We were talking about the ancient technology theme and decided to do a game using Roman weaponry and gladiators, but it ended up being about a lone Roman soldier defending their town from ferocious animals (who escaped\u00a0while being shipped\u00a0to the Colosseum!) using only spears. \u00a0Hundreds of spears.. \u00a0We came up with the basic idea on Saturday afternoon and over the rest of the weekend one of us did all the programming into Scratch while the other made all of the sprites etc. \u00a0We used the Pixel Art and PixiTracker apps on Android for the sprites and music and converted the Scratch file to a Flash game using\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/junebeetle.github.io\/converter\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/junebeetle.github.io\/converter\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n <p>We tried to make Roman Defence seem authentically retro, with very simple gameplay and pixel art sprites, and a soundtrack that stays with you afterwards for all the wrong reasons. \u00a0There is only one level, it starts off slow and gets faster. \u00a0The conclusion is sadly inescapable (the herd of beasts always\u00a0win!) but you get to take as many as possible with you. \u00a0You are helped by a power up in the form of Pompeiian bread, which allows you to use the Super Spears superpower for every thirty seconds you survive the onslaught.<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n \n <p>Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/gamejam\/\" rel=\"tag\">GameJam<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/ludum-dare\/\" rel=\"tag\">Ludum Dare<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/retro-arcade\/\" rel=\"tag\">retro arcade<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/roman-defence\/\" rel=\"tag\">roman defence<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/tower-defence\/\" rel=\"tag\">tower defence<\/a><\/p>","time":"August 29th, 2016 3:56 am","title":"First game, first gamejam!"}
