{"author_name":"GarrickWinter","cat":"MiniLD","comments":[],"epoch":1379900640,"likes":1,"metadata":{"p_key":"37844","p_author":"GarrickWinter","p_authorkey":"24682","p_urlkey":"73460","p_title":"Monster\u2019s Maze \u2013 Day 3 \u2013 Submitted!","p_cat":"MiniLD","p_event":"LD27","p_time":"1379900640","p_likes":"1","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"24682","us_name":"GarrickWinter","us_username":"garrickwinter","event_start":"1377216000","event_key":"18","event_name":"LD27"},"text":"<p>So I just finished Monster&#8217;s Maze and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/minild-45\/?action=preview&amp;uid=24682\">uploaded it<\/a> to the main thread!\u00a0 This has been a very whirlwind experience, since I didn&#8217;t at all expect to participate in this MiniLD, especially not since it only lasted 3 days and I had other work to attend to.\u00a0 And yet here I am, and I think I can say with confidence (I hope!) that Monster&#8217;s Maze turned out even better than my MiniLD #44 entry (Jumpstarter).<\/p>\n <p>The development process was incredibly smooth, with only a few major blockages.\u00a0 I think it helped a lot that I chose to make such a heavily restricted game world; that helped me focus my efforts on gameplay and balancing.\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy with the end result; it may be a little too hard (I can&#8217;t even survive until unlocking all weapons!), but it&#8217;s frantic and hopefully fun.<\/p>\n <p>I also learned a few things.\u00a0 Diffusion-based pathfinding is amazing, really, and I will have to pay close attention to my future projects to see if they would benefit from an implementation; it&#8217;s such a useful technique, that alone was worth getting into this MiniLD for.\u00a0 I also learned about using cellular automata to create mazes (and how to deal with the mazes if they aren&#8217;t completely navigable &#8211; interestingly, diffusion-based pathfinding really helps fix broken mazes!), some minor SFML details, some debugging techniques, and had my first real clash with the need to balance numbers in my game, both directly and algorithmically.<\/p>\n <p>Great and rewarding fun, all in all, and I hope everyone else enjoyed their time too!<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Promotional-2.png\"><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-297256\" alt=\"Promotional 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Promotional-2-550x352.png\" width=\"550\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Promotional-2-300x192.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Promotional-2-550x352.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Promotional-2.png 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n <p>As usual, cross-posting to <a href=\"http:\/\/playingwithmeaning.blogspot.ca\/\">my personal blog<\/a>!<\/p>\n \n <p>Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/minild-45\/\" rel=\"tag\">MiniLD #45<\/a><\/p>","time":"September 22nd, 2013 8:44 pm","title":"Monster\u2019s Maze \u2013 Day 3 \u2013 Submitted!"}
