It preys on the constant threat of the invisible evil, and on the player being helpless in the dark.<\/p>\n <p style=\"text-align: left\">the <strong>main mechanic <\/strong>in the game is the duct grates, and<strong> avoiding those grates<\/strong>. Scattered about the map are grates with <strong>Xenomorphs<\/strong> in them. Crew members passing the grate wakes the Xenomorph. During the next blackout the Xeno will attempt to devour a nearby Ensign. The lights flip on and reveal a <strong>bloody corpse and a bloody trail leading to the vents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Simple no?\u00a0Grates equal death. Death equals horror. Or so I thought.<\/strong><\/p>\n <p style=\"text-align: left\">This is what really happened.<\/p>\n <p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/expected.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-293148 aligncenter\" alt=\"expected\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/expected-550x185.png\" width=\"385\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/expected-300x101.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/expected-550x185.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/expected.png 655w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n <p>For <strong>maximum effect<\/strong> the player needed to be at least<strong> tensed up<\/strong> enough to <strong>dread the lights going out<\/strong>, only to be freaked out by the sudden fresh corpse.<\/p>\n <p>In reality this did not happen. <strong>Prior knowledge of the grates is critical to the player understanding and getting immersed in the game, and this mechanic was simply not obvious<\/strong>. I hinted to it in the narrative of course, and the blood and damage to the grates helps, but since the action happens in darkness the players eyes are never drawn towards the danger.<\/p>\n <p style=\"text-align: center\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"reality\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/reality.png\" width=\"258\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n <p><strong>How can we fix this?<\/strong><\/p>\n <p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">To remedy this in the post compo version we need to educate the player beforehand to help build tension, and draw the players focus to the ducts, and the inherent danger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <ul>\n <li>Expelling particles (steam) \/ spores from ducts.<\/li>\n <li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">Bright Lighting on the duct.<\/span><\/li>\n <li>Infestation near first threat areas.<\/li>\n <li>Pet signals.<\/li>\n <li><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">Sound effects!<\/span><\/li>\n <li>Crew dialog<\/li>\n <li>Foreshadowing with narrative, sfx.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">A clear threat should help build tension better and enhance the survival horror theme.<\/span><\/p>\n <p><img class=\" wp-image-293166 alignleft\" alt=\"blog post 3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/blog-post-31-550x201.png\" width=\"385\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/blog-post-31-550x201.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/blog-post-31.png 612w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n <p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">Next up: Don&#8217;t Forget Adding Content!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>","time":"August 30th, 2013 3:38 am","title":"Fixing Compo Fails #1: Don\u2019t Obfuscate Mechanics!"}
