Harmonize – postmortem
This was my first ever jam. Total time was 16 hours. My brother Gavin put in about one hour on the sound and music, and he had the original idea for the concept.
I spent about half my time in MyPaint and Gimp, getting the art ready. I’m not really an artist, but this concept was based more on the ambience and look than on the gameplay. You may find it to be frustrating trial and error to actually play, like I did! But the tranquil ending is worth three minutes of playing the game, right?
One issue with basing the gameplay on the visuals was that by the time I had enough visuals ready to test the gameplay, there was no time to tweak and improve it.
I originally planned for three levels, but ended up just using the extra art as a reward for completing the first level. I was hoping to try out my brand new copy of Spine to put some sway in the plants, but I would have needed at least another day to get that working. We also wanted there to be three little animated guys you could click on to play the instruments at the bottom of the screen.
Pre-existing code that I used was a parallax camera object I had created for another project.
The three instruments in the game are a shakuhachi, shamisen, and a taiko drum.
