The only thing I really know is java. I am not sure where to go from there. I don&#8217;t know what libraries I should use or what kind of sound or picture editor to use, or the basis of how to start making a game. I use graphicsgale for pixel art and gimp for transparency. I&#8217;ve done a bit of java before and for that I used Eclipse. As for tutorials there&#8217;s lots of stuff online that&#8217;s easy to find. Failing that, you could check the Tigsource forum Tutorials thread. There&#8217;s probably something there. I have decided to do a mix of what you to have suggested. I have been messing with the AS3 as my base as it appears to be simpler than java. I am also using graphics gale and gimp for sprites.
