{"author_name":"Wydra","cat":"LD #24","comments":[],"epoch":1346177460,"likes":0,"metadata":{"p_key":"51692","p_author":"Wydra","p_authorkey":"15541","p_urlkey":"87387","p_title":"Infection \u2013 Postmortem","p_cat":"LD #24","p_event":"LD24","p_time":"1346177460","p_likes":"0","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"15541","us_name":"Wydra","us_username":"wydra","event_start":"1345766400","event_key":"12","event_name":"LD24"},"text":"<p>Well I finished within the 48 hour deadline and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-24\/?action=preview&amp;uid=15541\">my game is in a playable state<\/a>, for that I am extremely happy!\u00a0 I\u2019m glad that I decided to participate and look forward to doing it again.\u00a0 Next time I think I will try to target web or use MonoGame so that it will be playable on Linux.<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/compo2\/163678\/15541-shot1.jpg\"><img class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/compo2\/163678\/15541-shot1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n <h2>What Went Right<\/h2>\n <p><strong>The Artwork<br \/>\n <\/strong>It\u2019s very crude but given my skills I am pleased with how it looks.\u00a0 All of the sprites were drawn by hand in Paint.net.\u00a0 Also I decided to add some 2 frame animations to the virus and antigens, which was well worth the effort.<\/p>\n <p><strong>The Music<br \/>\n <\/strong>I was hoping to do a piano and drum track, but given that I have no skills in music production I had to resort to tool-generated music.\u00a0 I think it sounds good and I\u2019m glad I added it.\u00a0 I\u2019m especially happy that I was able to add a special track to play when you beat the game.<\/p>\n <p><strong>The Map<br \/>\n <\/strong>I was able to implement a map 5000&#215;5000 pixels across that wraps the player around to the other side when they cross the boundaries.\u00a0 I had never implemented a map like this so it was a fun challenge.\u00a0 I almost had to abandon the idea when I realized that I would have trouble with drawing when the player is near the edge of the map due to the fact that I would need to render something at the other end of the world as if it were close to you.<\/p>\n <h2>What Went Wrong<\/h2>\n <p><strong>Collision Detection<\/strong><br \/>\n I really need to figure out an efficient algorithm for collision checks.\u00a0 Normally efficiency is far from my mind, but when an algorithm is running 30,000+ comparisons 60 times a second efficiency is extremely important.\u00a0 Because collision checking took so much system resources, I was forced to abandon some of my gameplay ideas.\u00a0 If I continue to work on the game after this competition this will be the first area I address.<\/p>\n <p><strong>Gameplay<\/strong><br \/>\n It\u2019s more of an extremely casual simulation than a game.\u00a0 It\u2019s trivially easy to beat, and you probably won\u2019t die a single time unless you try to.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned from my other game experiments that getting fun gameplay is the hardest part of game design, and that remains true here.<\/p>\n <h2>Things That Were Cut<\/h2>\n <ul>\n <li>In-Game Tutorial<\/li>\n <li>Additional spawning of enemies and cells to make the game harder as you progress<\/li>\n <li>Ability to name your virus<\/li>\n <li>I wanted to make the cells wobble<\/li>\n <li>Animations for virus birth<\/li>\n <li>Collision between cells<\/li>\n <li>AI for virus\/enemies (white blood cells should seek out viruses)<\/li>\n <li>Background texture with parallax scrolling<\/li>\n <li>Alternate textures\/rotations for cells so everything doesn\u2019t look identical<\/li>\n <li>More evolution paths (including the ability to infect white blood cells)<\/li>\n <li>Different cell types (tissue, blood, and nerve)<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-24\/?action=preview&amp;uid=15541\">Play the game!<\/a><\/p>\n \n <p>Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/postmortem\/\" rel=\"tag\">postmortem<\/a><\/p>","time":"August 28th, 2012 1:11 pm","title":"Infection \u2013 Postmortem"}
