First Ludum Dare – Practicing Coding
This was my first Ludum Dare! I have worked as an animator for a few years in the games industry, but I recently quit and started a 2-person company with a software engineer from my former office (our devblog for our first game is here: http://www.troubleimpact.com – if you’re interested!) My partner does the programming, but I’ve been trying to learn over the last 6 months or so, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to get in some C# practice (I have previously only coded one small game by myself).
Of the two ideas I liked, I decided on the one that seemed less crazy, since it’s my first solo jam. The idea was to do a 4 stage (haha) endless runner style game – where you jump over/slide under obstacles & one hit kills you. If you survive to the end of stage one (amoeba), you progress to stage two (fish), then amphibian, then lizard. I started with the lizard and got the build below – but at the end of the night I felt like the bulk of the work was going to be art, whereas I wanted to practice coding. Because of this, on day two I played around with the other idea I had brainstormed. You can see that I didn’t get very far with it, but I learned a ton. All you can do is use the up & down arrow keys to move the character – but try it and see what happens!
