{"author_name":"icefox","cat":"LD #23","comments":[],"epoch":1335141900,"likes":1,"metadata":{"p_key":"56380","p_author":"icefox","p_authorkey":"7186","p_urlkey":"92111","p_title":"Survived my first Ludum Dare!","p_cat":"LD #23","p_event":"LD23","p_time":"1335141900","p_likes":"1","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"7186","us_name":"icefox","us_username":"icefox","event_start":"1334880000","event_key":"10","event_name":"LD23"},"text":"<p>&#8230;and I even made a game!\u00a0 Which even works, last time I checked at least.\u00a0 Not bad for someone who came down with the flu about three hours into it, hm?\u00a0 You may find the game here: http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-23\/?action=preview&amp;uid=7186 .\u00a0 I also made some screencast videos in the comment at the bottom, so check those out too.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/2012\/04\/22\/survived-my-first-ludum-dare\/screenshot-200\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-135053\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-135053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/screenshot47-300x229.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/screenshot47-300x229.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/screenshot47-550x420.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/screenshot47.png 798w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n <p>Of course the code is fugly, which actually started becoming a significant barrier towards the end.\u00a0 And of course there&#8217;s a ton of things I wanted to do that I didn&#8217;t get a chance to.\u00a0 I had plans for enemies to invade your planet, break the connections holding your planets together, maybe a boss-type enemy, some sort of win condition&#8230;<\/p>\n <p>Honestly though?\u00a0 I think works okay the way it is: simple and arcade-y.\u00a0 And in a playable state; don&#8217;t forget that.\u00a0 I never felt I wouldn&#8217;t complete it in time, but it came much closer than I really expected!\u00a0 Mainly due to keeling over due to disease on Saturday evening; that probably lost me five hours or more.<\/p>\n <p>The main thing I skimped on is graphics rendering really&#8230;\u00a0 I never imposed any real draw order rules, and as a result the game sort of looks like ass.\u00a0 I wanted to do much better effects in terms of particles and such as well, plus nicer effects for capturing planets and such.\u00a0 You were originally supposed to plant a seed that would grow out into a vine that snagged the other planet; the blue line was originally a placeholder.\u00a0 A placeholder that ended up in the main game&#8230; oh well.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a couple bugs left in the geometry in general, too.\u00a0 Alas.<\/p>\n <p>Lessons learned?\u00a0 Software rendering, and python in general, is STILL slow.\u00a0 I STILL hate geometry (though I&#8217;m not too bad at it by now).\u00a0 Programming while you have a fever is STILL a bad idea.\u00a0 Mixing coordinate systems is ALSO a bad idea, at least if you do it poorly!\u00a0 And one can make surprisingly cute sprite-art as long as your resolution is 64&#215;64 or smaller.\u00a0 Maybe next time I&#8217;ll try Unity or something, or at LEAST use numpy for vector maths; I bet that&#8217;d help a lot in terms of performance.<\/p>\n <p>Maybe I should learn to compose music at least a little?\u00a0 This game is really begging for some kitchy MIDI tunes.<\/p>\n <p>If I were to continue this, which I may or may not&#8230; the thing needs a good hard refactoring, followed by some profiling and optimization.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t REALLY need to run the physics and AI for the bits of the universe you can&#8217;t see.\u00a0 After that would come graphics and bug fixes, with better particles and real animations, and maybe those vines I was talking about.\u00a0 (I mourn the loss of those vines; I think it would have been really neat conceptually and visually.)\u00a0 A few more enemy types&#8230; a commando with a rocket launcher who could jump, and maybe a gun-bot sort of like the Skysmashers from Iji.\u00a0 Power-ups. Other planets with engines you could hijack and drive around.\u00a0 Enemies that tried to come and invade your planet and destroy your engine.\u00a0 Defense cannons on heavily-defended planets.\u00a0 The list goes on&#8230;<\/p>\n <p>But for now&#8230; time for a milk shake!<\/p>","time":"April 22nd, 2012 7:45 pm","title":"Survived my first Ludum Dare!"}
