I think I will release a simple demo of &#8220;what could&#8217;ve been&#8221; and wait 4 months and be much more prepared.<br \/>\n I think next LD I will be able to really make something and finish it.","spam":"N"}],"epoch":1324231860,"likes":1,"metadata":{"p_key":"60756","p_author":"Tulrath","p_authorkey":"4703","p_urlkey":"96509","p_title":"Not going to make it","p_cat":"LD #22","p_event":"LD22","p_time":"1324231860","p_likes":"1","p_comments":"1","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"4703","us_name":"Tulrath","us_username":"tulrath","event_start":"1323993600","event_key":"8","event_name":"LD22"},"text":"<p>With just 6 hours left, I&#8217;m way behind schedule and I&#8217;m not going to make the LD48 deadline. \u00a0Here&#8217;s what went wrong &#8211; hopefully for others (and myself) to learn from:<\/p>\n <ol>\n <li>I did the warm-up, but didn&#8217;t go far enough. \u00a0I really should have gone further and tested every system possible.<\/li>\n <li>For this LD48 I wanted to use more robust, and more flexible data management than my previous LD48 entry. \u00a0A few of my systems I thought I could build quickly with JS instead of C#&#8230; How wrong I was. \u00a0Unity&#8217;s slight differences to canonical JS became a major pain when I started using more advanced techniques. \u00a0When it was time to build on those simple JS frameworks, it just turned out that they just couldn&#8217;t do the job. \u00a0Ultimately I had to use System.Collection.Generic lists for everything, but I lost about 4 hours overall figuring that out.<\/li>\n <li>I opted to use a 3rd party library for sprite management in Unity. \u00a0The library worked perfectly, but I just wasn&#8217;t familiar enough with it to use it correctly the first time out. \u00a0I kept running into what I thought were &#8220;issues&#8221; &#8212; but they weren&#8217;t issues at all, it was just my own lack of experience with the library. \u00a0LD48 is probably a bad time to be learning how to use a new tool.<\/li>\n <li>And finally, (IMHO) the artwork that you need to do a 2D game can actually take significantly more time than a 3D game &#8212; it&#8217;s more difficult to represent 3D objects in two-dimensional space. \u00a0Gradients and shadowing can help, but those are extremely manually-intensive processes. \u00a0I&#8217;m pretty good with Blender, so in the future I may actually build simple 3D objects and just take snapshots of them from different angles to create my sprites.<\/li>\n <\/ol>\n <div>This LD48 has been great fun, especially all the Kitten-Enriched content <img src=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/simple-smile.png\" alt=\":)\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" \/> \u00a0I&#8217;ll be more prepared for the next one.<\/div>\n <p>&nbsp;<\/p>","time":"December 18th, 2011 1:11 pm","title":"Not going to make it"}
