General Progress Update 2/20/2017

I have been fairly active working on various projects lately.

I’ve been re-doing the Game object in my library to use requestAnimationFrame(), and working on adding proper documentation. There are other changes, too, and these are best reflected/explained on the library’s github.

SpongebobZelda progresses slowly. I’ve hit that wall where motivation is hard to maintain. Primary reason is this is a tedious process. None the less, it progresses.

I’ve been working on one of the games I created before Ludum Dare. I’m trying to get all the games build with my library all to use the same codebase, as far as the library is concerned. In the past, they all used a single JS file containing everything. This is not the case anymore, and things were also changed over time. The results is a few games and demos that are a bit difficult to maintain.

I’ve been experimenting with the Phoria.js 3D Canvas rendering library. Mixed feelings is all I have to say about that.

I have also experimented with the jszip library in one of my other projects.

In general, I’ve been busy working on my projects at mostly the usual pace, but I haven’t really mentioned anything of it. I look forward to LudumDare 38, probably going to team-up with my friend, again, but this is far from confirmed on either my side or his.

I also grow ever more tired of JS graphics limitations, short of using webGL. It just goes to show the W3C is not developers, themselves, or simply do not care. Flash offers far more than HTML5 Canvas ever will, at this rate. And, since JS is so sloooooooow, Canvas doesn’t matter, webGL is mandatory. Let me just saw raw image manipulation is one pain in the butt with canvas… (and pretty expensive) There’s no good excuse for APIs to be this inadequate. //end rant

I’m cautiously optimistic about Web Assembly… shows promise, if someone doesn’t screw-up, or all the various IDEs/compilers actually support it. Based on current trends, that outlook is pretty grim. I’d rather not learn C++ just to make web games/apps. That happens, I’ll abandon web game/app development and stick to desktop. I guess we’ll just see what happens.

That’s a wrap!

I will probably post more specific project progress in a few weeks? maybe…? IDK… I’d rather not spam the discussions here with “I added a single line of code!” , or something that is just as insignificant.
