{"author_name":"devinmoore","cat":"LD  #18 - Enemies as Weapons - 2010","comments":[],"epoch":1282516560,"likes":0,"metadata":{"p_key":"69399","p_author":"devinmoore","p_authorkey":"2506","p_urlkey":"105204","p_title":"Smores Attack Post Mortem","p_cat":"LD  #18 - Enemies as Weapons - 2010","p_event":"LD18","p_time":"1282516560","p_likes":"0","p_comments":"0","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"2506","us_name":"devinmoore","us_username":"devinmoore","event_start":"1282262400","event_key":"4","event_name":"LD18"},"text":"<p>I am pretty happy with how Smores Attack came out in the end, although it is not as fully featured as I had hoped.\u00a0 With my first LD done, now I understand the basic issues I am likely to face making an applet game.\u00a0 I have made a bunch of games before, but I hadn&#8217;t made a sprite-based, flash-looking\u00a0applet game in a while, and dealing with the initial graphics setup in Java took the vast majority of my time, effort, and motivation to get through.\u00a0 I had to throw away 2-3 attempts at getting the sprites to render correctly, but finally I achieved success.\u00a0<\/p>\n <p>Once I had that done, making the game itself was pretty easy and fun.\u00a0 I can see why so many people start with frameworks now, although I think it is really rewarding to not start with one because then my game doesn&#8217;t have all this other overhead that it doesn&#8217;t need (I&#8217;m sure it&#8217;s not as optimized as I could make it anyhow, but still it&#8217;s pretty small for what it is).\u00a0 The background color change was the smartest move&#8230; the characters really pop off the screen with the blue background vs. red.\u00a0 My time lapse shows the heavy editing necessary to draw the animations, many of which I didn&#8217;t have time to implement.\u00a0<\/p>\n <p><a title=\"ld18 smores attack time lapse video\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=egd5gI-VryE\">time lapse video<\/a><\/p>","time":"August 22nd, 2010 5:36 pm","title":"Smores Attack Post Mortem"}
