Some Games from the Assembly Contest for Inspiration

Someone posted a link to scene.org on here and thanks btw, I have spent the last 24 hours downloading demos and games from that site. There is some great stuff on there. It’s all about programming with limited resources, 4k, 64k, etc. Using procedural generation to create resources, etc. Basically, building things as small and fast as possible.

In the games contest, here are a couple games I absolutely love. Might provide some inspiration.

Counterbalance – 2009 Assembly Game Winner (written in C++ with SDL and FMOD)

Tricky Truck – 2010 Assembly Game Winner (written in ???) (latest version here)

You’ve got to try these games if you get a chance, they are wonderful.

The demoscene and 4k, 64k style demos are simply the greatest thing evar. I’ve been watching the demoscene since my BBS days. Heck, I once programmed a “loader” that was a ms-dos .COM file (that’s right, not an .EXE), 2k of ascii art goodness in Turbo Pascal with inline assembly!

I have been around that long too. Used to run a warez bbs for the atari 800 and then amiga. Used to develop games professionally for the genesis, snes, psx and saturn. I don’t consider myself old, just experienced.
