Streaming is\u00a0one of many ways you can participate in the community and share your development experiences.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to install <a href=\"http:\/\/objsproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Open Broadcaster Software\">Open Broadcaster\u00a0Software<\/a>. This is\u00a0a competitor to the popular XSplit, and in my opinion\u00a0is easier to use. Also, it\u2019s free!<\/p>\n<p>When you start the application, you\u2019ll see a window similar to this one:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/data\/posts\/2014\/04\/1fe801534673e44156d565c39e5d3f19.png\"><img alt=\"OBS tutorial 1\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-338034\" height=\"256\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"\/data\/posts\/2014\/04\/f75a742cf0b14eee73dc7a74c1e0bb8a.png\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-17.57.49-300x256.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-17.57.49-550x470.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-17.57.49.png 799w\" width=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see two boxes labeled Scenes and Sources, which are very important to composing your stream production:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sources are\u00a0aptly named video sources which can be layered and positioned to create the final output. For most purposes, simply using a Monitor\u00a0Capture is fine enough. You can right click here to add and manipulate sources.<\/li>\n<li>Scenes are configurations of sources that you can switch to using bound hotkeys or plugins that automatically switch scenes for you. I recommend setting up at least two scenes and binding them to hotkeys, one as your desktop and the other as a \u201cI\u2019ll be right back\u201d or censor screen so you don\u2019t have to show an idle screen or something private. A funny gif will suffice (yes, you can use pictures as sources).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Press Preview Stream and play around with your scene and source settings to get a feel for the application. Once you\u2019re ready we can start working on the encoding and uploading to Twitch.tv\u2026 Press Settings, and you\u2019ll get this window:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/data\/posts\/2014\/04\/18d0f7e13863bbf5fc36cdd18683ae06.png\"><img alt=\"OBS Tutorial 2\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-338037\" height=\"249\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"\/data\/posts\/2014\/04\/2b6e1217097b85605ccccd22d96066e4.png\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-18.01.15-300x249.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-18.01.15-550x456.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screenshot-2014-04-23-18.01.15.png 855w\" width=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the left side:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>General \u2014 change application language, switch and add\u00a0streaming profiles, various settings<\/li>\n<li>Encoding \u2014 change which encoder is used. If you are using\u00a0Intel\u2019s integrated video on Sandy Bridge and up processors, you should use Quick Sync.\u00a0I haven\u2019t seen performance stats for Nvidia NVENC for those who use those graphics cards, but I have heard that it is actually very bandwidth heavy. So play around with these settings\u00a0and observe your Preview bitrate and performance.<\/li>\n<li>Broadcast Settings \u2014 here you can choose to record directly to file or to a streaming service. We\u2019re using Twitch here, so what you\u2019re going to have to do is login to Twitch, go to your Dashboard, and click Stream Key on the toolbar, and copy your Stream Key from there. Select Twitch as your streaming service and a server near you, and paste your stream key into the box. Set some hotkeys for toggling the stream (I use Ctrl+Alt+Num7 and 8).<\/li>\n<li>Video \u2014 This controls the output size. You should choose your monitor resolution and then downscale it as you need to based on how much bandwidth you have.\u00a0Since we\u2019re not hosting\u00a0full video game streams, it\u2019s safe to set your FPS to 15 to dramatically reduce bandwidth usage and maximize your set bitrate from the Encoding panel.<\/li>\n<li>Audio \u2014\u00a0You probably won\u2019t have to mess with anything here, but it\u2019s worth mentioning. You can set mute toggle hotkeys, push-to-talk, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced \u2014 Set the encoding profile to main and the keyframe interval to 2, or the Broadcast Settings panel will continue to whine at you.<\/li>\n<li>Microphone Noise Gate \u2014 this is a panel added by the\u00a0Microphone Noise Gate plugin, this will automatically toggle your microphone so background noise doesn\u2019t get into the stream when you\u2019re not speaking. You\u2019ll have to configure this based on your microphone setup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you have reviewed all of the settings panels, you can start your stream by clicking \u201cStart Streaming\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019re streaming, you can go to your dashboard, hide the preview (so you don\u2019t get\u00a0a feedback loop from the sound of your stream) and change your playing status to Playing Ludum Dare, as follows:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/OBS-tutorial-3.png\"><img alt=\"OBS tutorial 3\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-338041\" height=\"185\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"\/data\/posts\/2014\/04\/efac85a189e0c074494110734c3710c1.png\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/OBS-tutorial-3-300x185.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/OBS-tutorial-3.png 382w\" width=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By setting\u00a0your Playing status to Ludum Dare, you\u2019ll show up on the right panel on the Ludum Dare website as well as in the game category for the jam.<\/p>\n<p>Hope this helps!<\/p>","time":"April 23rd, 2014 4:14 pm","title":"Twitch Streaming Guide","title_was_empty":false}
