{"assets":[],"author_link":"author\/atmospherium\/","author_name":"Atmospherium","cat":"LD #27","categories":["LD #27"],"comments":[],"epoch":1377615900,"event":"LD27","likes":10,"metadata":{"p_key":"81214","p_author":"Atmospherium","p_authorkey":"0","p_urlkey":"290331","p_title":"Unity Exporting \u2013 Being nice to Linux users","p_cat":"LD #27","p_event":"LD27","p_time":"1377615900","p_likes":"10","p_comments":"0","p_status":"WAYBACK","us_key":null,"us_name":null,"us_username":null,"event_start":"1377216000","event_key":"18","event_name":"LD27"},"source_url":"2013\/08\/27\/unity-exporting-being-nice-to-linux-users\/","text":"<p>A lot of the entries for Ludum Dare #27 have been created using Unity (including my entry), and I wanted to pass along some information that might be helpful for Unity developers to make their games as accessible as possible for all players. \u00a0Users on Windows and Mac don\u2019t need dedicated builds as frequently, given that the Unity webplayer is readily available to them. \u00a0For people using Linux systems, however, they must download and play the game directly on their system. \u00a0Here\u2019s a few steps to improve the experience for Linux users. \u00a0The instructions that follow are for Windows, but I\u2019m sure there will be similar solutions for Mac<\/p>\n<p>1: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.7-zip.org\/download.html\">Download 7-zip<\/a>. \u00a0This will allow you to create archives in Linux-supported formats (.tar and .gz).<\/p>\n<p>2: Export for Linux in Unity:<br\/>\nI\u2019m not going to post a tutorial for doing this, as Unity\u2019s interface is fairly self-explanatory. \u00a0But you should end up with a folder that looks like this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen18.png\"><img alt=\"Screen1\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-291089\" height=\"166\" sizes=\"(max-width: 286px) 100vw, 286px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen18.png\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen18-300x174.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen18.png 476w\" width=\"286\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3: Put both files together in one folder and name it something that makes it easily identifiable. \u00a0LD27-YourTitleHere should be adequate<\/p>\n<p>4: Right-click on this folder, select 7-Zip&gt;Add to archive\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen23.png\"><img alt=\"Screen2\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-291098\" height=\"247\" sizes=\"(max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen23.png\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen23-300x164.png 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen23-550x301.png 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Screen23.png 752w\" width=\"451\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">5: This will bring up a prompt that allows you to package the directory in a variety of ways. \u00a0For archive format, select \u201ctar\u201d. \u00a0Leave everything else with the default settings and click OK. \u00a0This should give you a new file called LD27-YourTitleHere.tar<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">6: Repeat step 4 on this new file (Add to archive), but in the prompt, select the Archive format of \u201cgzip\u201d. \u00a0Leave everything else default and click OK. \u00a0You should now have a file called LD27-YourTitleHere.tar.gz<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">7: Upload your new Linux-friendly game to your hosting site and link it on your page.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This may look like a bit of work, but keep in mind that the few extra minutes this takes can really improve people\u2019s impression of your game and open the door to a broader audience.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/p><\/p>","time":"August 27th, 2013 3:05 pm","title":"Unity Exporting \u2013 Being nice to Linux users","title_was_empty":false}
