{"assets":[],"author_link":"author\/cowboycolor\/","author_name":"cowboycolor","cat":"LD #32","categories":["LD #32"],"comments":[],"epoch":1430490000,"event":"LD32","likes":12,"metadata":{"p_key":"83694","p_author":"cowboycolor","p_authorkey":"0","p_urlkey":"294433","p_title":"A lot of people say X-11 is too hard\u2026","p_cat":"LD #32","p_event":"LD32","p_time":"1430490000","p_likes":"12","p_comments":"0","p_status":"WAYBACK","us_key":null,"us_name":null,"us_username":null,"event_start":"1429228800","event_key":"27","event_name":"LD32"},"source_url":"2015\/05\/01\/a-lot-of-people-say-x-11-is-too-hard\/","text":"<p>So here is Mandolin (who made <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-32\/?action=preview&amp;uid=52784\" target=\"_blank\">Pillow Fight<\/a>) completing it in 5:00 without losing a single life:<\/p>\n<p><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WX3ciW8m5uE?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As a side-note, <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/ludum-dare-32\/?action=preview&amp;uid=51198\" target=\"_blank\">X-11 \u201cGust Gunner\u201d<\/a> was made to emulate NES-era difficulty and aesthetic, meaning <em>you will <\/em><em>die A LOT, <\/em>and consequently, you will blame it on the game.\u00a0 Originally, I was going to have a stock of three lives to complete the game, otherwise you had to start from the beginning.\u00a0 Some people called that \u201csadistic\u201d, and I bowed and agreed\u2026 <em>the game is in the EASY state it is now because I understand that there is a wide variety of types of gamers who will play a Ludum Dare submission, and not all of them want to be tantalized for their skill level at twitchy platformers.\u00a0 <\/em>Essentially, what I\u2019m saying is that the game IS NOT hard, because you can never truly fail.\u00a0 You have infinite lives, mid-level checkpoints, and a nerf\u2019d boss.\u00a0 The mechanics are <em>different.<\/em>\u00a0 That is the point of the LD for me!\u00a0 <em>Innovation!\u00a0 <\/em>Every time somebody tells me that they died too much because of the \u201cmechanics\u201d not being tightened up enough, I slam my face against the wall.\u00a0 The mechanics (with a few exceptions, namely, the boss bullet hell being too avoidable) are <em>exactly <\/em> what we intended them to be.\u00a0 We spent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">most<\/span> of our time fine-tuning the player\u2019s controls.\u00a0 It just takes time to get used to playing something you aren\u2019t used to playing.\u00a0 My supporting argument:\u00a0 the video above.\u00a0 Mandolin has not played this game as much as either of us have, but they managed to do something even we haven\u2019t done yet:\u00a0 a perfect run.\u00a0 If a game is able to have a flawless run by someone who has only played the game for a couple of weeks, then it is not a difficult game.<\/p>\n<p>Cheers!<\/p>\n<p>-C<\/p>","time":"May 1st, 2015 2:20 pm","title":"A lot of people say X-11 is too hard\u2026","title_was_empty":false}
