It's a powerful little system, but it's not well designed for what I was trying to do, and I'm not familiar enough with it to bend it to my will.  Eventually I got a serious headache and nearly gave up.  One nap and some medication later, though, I decided to just drop RenPy and switch to JavaScript, and scale back my idea.  Now instead of a 48 hour game I'm trying to do a 24 hour game... but at least I've finally got something working!
