Bug Fixes and the Rules
Sorry for the following rant. The purpose of LD is of course to improve our own abilities. But part of the reason we moved to the new website was to make judging more fair, so the competition is at least somewhat important. Since there are bugs in my game I'd like to fix, but I don't want to for the sake of fair competition, the following rant is meant to alleviate some of the stress I get from seeing bug fix posts.
Begin Rant
Is it just me, or are more people doing bug fixes this time around. I get the feeling that people are being a little to fast and loose with the bug fixes. Things that should go in a post-compo/jam release are just being put in the game itself. If I remember correctly, the rules only allow for fixing bugs that make the game unplayable. If you have a bug that makes the game not very fun, but it still runs, then that bug is part of the product you released for the competition. Of course there are going to be problematic bugs in a game made in 48 hours, but part of the skill required for a competition like this is limiting the effects of such bugs. If you can go in during the week after and fix ones that just make your game not very fun, that feels like you are doing more than just making the game playable.
