Communitas: city sim + resource management + /r/place from reddit. Almost.

The title is exaggeration, but we sure tried to make it.

The main point of Communitas is to build a "healthful" city. But you have to deal with tile placing timeouts and other people messing with your city. Organizing in groups is the key to success, although, for now, people are being very polite e collaborating with everyone.

We never tried to do a online game before, so we kinda knew it was going to be difficult. It's a simple game and the server itself was not a problem to code. The same cannot be said about the server host. Damn, we needed to replace the server right after the deadline because it was too slow (Azure to Google).

But where we really did get a beatdown was in trying to make the client in HTML5. None of us had experience with it and we couldn't make a performatic client in HTML5. We even tried some engines like Phaser and PixiJS, but no dice. So we ended up with Unity again. The server is an ASP.net WebAPI app hosted on the Google Cloud (yay for trials!).

We had many cool ideas, like naming the cities, city walls, bridges, pollution control, job demand, well you know the city sim drill. But in a more simplistic way, of course. And some things are implemented but we ran out of time to really show it and explain it, like building effect radius that some kind of tiles have.

For now, we're waiting for the feedback to validate the concept and maybe get courage to make a real attempt at this idea.

We'll be waiting for your comments, so check our entry.

Thanks! See ya around.
