Custom engine is a pain in the ass

This was my first game jam, and also the first game I made using my own game engine, ve. I spent a ton of time developing the engine - about eight months. One of the reasons I built it was pure curiosity. Graphics rendering has always felt like a mysterious and obscure thing to me. Writing the engine helped me break open the black box and finally understand how everything works behind the scenes. Once I finished the engine, I wanted to test it with a real project. That's when Ludum Dare came along just in time. I had heard a lot about the game jam before, so I signed up without hesitation. A week before the jam started, I only had a renderer and input handling, but no music. Without thinking too much about it, I decided to use miniaudio for audio loading and playback. I also added some cool visual effects like dithering, and borrowed some math functions from Raylib.

To make myself even happier, I decided to develop the game on Arch Linux. Unfortunately, this approach led to a bunch of bugs in Windows. One of them was related to physics. As we all know, you should always use a fixed time delta for physics calculations. However, this time, due to haste and carelessness, I completely ignored this golden rule. In Linux, everything worked fine - moving or resizing windows did not pause the game. However, on my beloved Windows, the opposite happened: any interaction with the window paused the game, causing the time delta to spike and, in an instant, sending objects flying into space with massive force. I did not manage to fix this bug before the deadline because it appeared late, and I simply ran out of time.

As a result, my team and I ended up with a difficult game about microwaves, complete with an eerie atmosphere. We even published recipes.
