2nd Compo Completed!

banner.png This game marks the second time I finished my 2nd Compo game.
Almost gave up! But somehow made it through until the end.
My LD record is not good. I've participated a total of 4 times before. 3 of them was a failure due to either bad time management or just plain unplayable game.

However!!
After 1 and a half year of not participating LD, I'm back better than I've ever been!
Here's a screenshot of the game

ss.png For the past few attempts, I've picked Unity3d as my tool of choice. This time around, I took a different approach and created a HTML game using Facebook's React without any gaming/rendering framework.

This means that I had to create most of it from scratch! At the end of the first day, I only finished the core gameplay which was to walk around and move the camera. The second day was no better really.
I can say that probably 75% of the code I wrote can be extracted and be made into its own library. One of the file is 200+ lines long!

That said, I'm impressed by the flexibility and the efficiency I can achieve by using some open-source library intended to be used on the web. Without these, I'll not be able to create this game as fast as I did. Those are: - react-router for flow management - redux for state management - create-react-app as a boilerplate code that includes all kinds of stuff you'll want when developing such as live reload!

All in all, I'm quite happy I used the things I did. Learned a few technologies that I always wanted to try but just never got the time to do such as: - CSS Grid - Web audio API - Trying to create a universal native game
and the list goes on...

There's one part in the game's code I find really satisfying: code.png This is the code used to define what a block/tile does. The number represents the id.
The following element that are given are custom Components that can render the tile itself, or do something completely different!
If you know a bit of React, you'll know that the possibilities of this are endless. For example, combined with Redux, you can easily create tiles that can change what it renders based on what the player had done. And that's just the beginning!

If you find this interesting, go ahead and play the game! Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
